Multiple people have allegedly been killed after a vehicle ploughed through a crowd of revellers on New Orleans' famous Bourbon Street in the US, according to local media and eyewitnesses.

New Orleans Police Department said that a lorry may have run down the group on the street, which is in the Louisiana city's French Quarter.

Witnesses speaking to CBS News claimed that a vehicle crashed into a crowd at high speed, and then the driver got out and started firing a weapon, with police returning fire.

It was unknown how many people have been killed or injured, but unconfirmed reports on social media claimed it is a "mass casualty" incident.

The incident allegedly occurred around 3.15am local time at the intersection of Bourbon Street and Iberville.

In a post on X, a journalist at local news outlet WGNO-TV wrote: "NOPD source states that as many as 10 fatalities after driver in pickup truck plowed into crowd on Bourbon Street.

"Multiple more injuries. Mayor and police chief on scene," he added, though this has not yet been confirmed.

Social media videos show chaotic scene in city centre

Videos circulating on social media that appear to have been recorded today at the scene of the mass casualty incident show multiple casualties on the ground in New Orleans.

Gunfire can be heard in the background and people can be seen running from the area.

Witnesses that spoke to CBS News have described a vehicle driving into a crowd on New Orleans' Bourbon Street, before a driver exited the vehicle and fired a weapon.

We are still waiting for confirmation information about the kind and severity of injuries.

What we know so far about the New Orleans mass casualty incident

If you’re just joining us, here’s what we know so far:

CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, reports that there has been a possible mass casualty incident after a vehicle ran into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter.

Witnesses told a reporter at CBS News that:

  • A vehicle drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street at a high speed, before the driver then reportedly got out and began firing a weapon. Police then returned fire
  • Multiple people were on the ground with injuries, the eyewitness says
  • A New Orleans Police spokesperson told CBS News "initial reports show a car may have plowed into a group of people. Injuries are unknown but there are reported fatalities”

i have no idea who the driver is (or was, because it sounds like they got very thoroughly shot) but we're talking about bourbon st. at 3am, so occam's razor says it was just some relatively homegrown scumbag. maybe drunk, maybe high, maybe seething about a breakup or some perceived disrespect earlier that night-- not a political or religious type, no manifesto etc.

Isn't it great that you can watch these videos while clicking to shoot confetti?

Steve with AgendaFreeTV is covering live if you can tolerate him:
From what I've seen he's always bumbling around. Maybe I caught him at his worst (covering the South Korea habbening while on vacation in Mexico City).
Imagine living in a world full of such constant horrors that this type of thing is forgotten within a week.
I don't have to imagine it.
