I've watched a fair amount of Asmon this past year as he's gotten into political commentary, as a way of getting a barometer reading from someone who isn't particularly ideologically aligned. My impression is that he's autistic (and possibly a touch sociopathic) enough to shrug off appeals to emotion and speak what his lizard brain is thinking, while still having enough understanding of emotions to have a functional theory of mind and understand that his personal mindset isn't the norm or ought to be the norm. He's willing to say what most people instinctively think but aren't willing to for fear of social consequences.

His editor is 100% a chud.

So my hot take on H1B, cap it at whatever you want (no, you are almost certainly not going to be able to swing it being 0 right now), have it go to the companies willing to pay the highest salary for it instead of a lottery, and add a non-trivial tax (10-15%) on top of typical payroll tax.

If a company is willing to pay 15% on top of typical payroll tax and pay someone $250k, they are much more likely to be actually hurting at trying to hire someone vs winning the h1b lottery and paying someone $30k.

The spirit of the thing is irrelevent. The purpose of a system is what it does and the H1B system hasn’t worked in anything like the way you’re talking about in the entire time I’ve been politically aware, and I’m in my fucking 30’s.

I don’t mean to come off as too angry, but I know people that have gotten screwed by this shit.
