They were likely the last things he ever saw.
Completely untrue and I've also never heard of him being poor or drinking himself to death. He didn't even live in the house with the Black Paintings at the end of his life. He spent his last several years in France and died at the ripe old age of 82. Even when he was living in the house, he did so with a woman who was probably his lover and a little girl who was possibly his daughter. He was financially secure enough to give his son the estate that contained the Black Paintings and went to France where he continued to paint and make lithographs, none of which were anywhere near as dark as the Black Paintings. He even visited his native Spain again before his death. His final themes were bullfighting, which was a common motif from when he was young.

Here's a painting he made after the Black Paintings:

People tend let their imaginations wander when it comes to Goya's final years, but they are not that mysterious. He was an unhappy man towards the end of his life, but people really go wild with their speculations.

Goya thread tax mocking the Spanish obsession with illustrious genealogies: (they're jackasses all the way down)

Huh, that's new info for me, I remember reading that he died in the house and his body was recovered from there, but you're totally correct. Not sure where I picked up the part about him mostly living in the dark either, but that has always stuck with me.

I have told dozens and dozens of people this story, which makes it a lot funnier in hindsight. There's at least a hundred people in the world who have the complete wrong story in their minds.
