Don't know if this has been mentioned in the thread anywhere, but aren't suicide operators required to have routine psych checkups? Because listening to people talk about the worst parts of their lives is hard on a person's mental health. I know psychologists have to go to other psychologists for checkups, so the same should apply to suicide line operators, right?

Just asking because I haven't seen any mention of mental health checks related to TLL.

This is actually completely normal. Even if you're the most stable person on earth, if you're taking calls from suicidal people you run the risk of hearing them kill themselves on the line. Operators in real agencies are trained thoroughly on how to help people + help each other. It's a team effort thing.

But operators have noted there is no team structure in TLL and everyone is discombobulated and popping on and off line all the time.

Plus IIRC someone mentioned way back in the thread that suicide hotlines that actually answer their calls, also place limits on how many hours a month their operators are allowed to take calls to limit their exposure to the sort of traumatic shit one could potentially hear over the line.
Of course, it doesn't really matter for TLL since no one ever takes calls anyway, but the fact that they don't restrict the hours operators are on call and instead focus on counseling for the counselors is just another mark against them.

There's no positivity in her communications re TLL. It's all "Our community is dying!" or "We're going to fight and fight and fight!" There's no comforting aspect to it and no attempt to acknowledge the need for trans people to exist in the real world. In other words, I think having a stable, well-adjusted person on the other end would go against her unhealthy isolationist agenda.

I'm having to tell trans friends that if Trump's "hate crimes" haven't happened, there's a chance it won't happen. Between the news and the shit they read on twitter, they're a mess by the time I usually get to them. They need reasons to live, trans insurgency isn't going to cut it.

It's a bummer, but you have a point. Their way of thinking is like an old-school Baptist. Control your minions through fear. If it is revealed that not everyone hates trans people, they might start to think their lives are okay. That kind of thinking leads to independent thought and personal opinions. 1) TLL starting another charity (TAP?) Which freely gives out money, no questions asked besides "what do you need". So there is zero way of tracking where it is actually going.

Edit: One more. The lack of actually accreditation as a suicide prevention line. The complete disregard for proper training of their operators (and the fact some are underage) which presents itself in calls like the one where the caller was hung up on for being confused about their tranny-ness.
