Squid Game - battle Royale but adults!

Solves the 5 legged game all by himself, is special forces gun expert, doesn't betray anyone, isn't greedy, doesn't get anyone killed on purpose, isn't an asshole (big ask for the cast).

He's about as close to mary sue as you can get, infinitely virtuous and supremely competent. People said ali was too perfect, but at least he was a bit naive, the troon has nothing.
Wait. I thought this non-greedy troon voted to continue in one episode to pay for his surgery?

If you want to see "greedy" take a look at the old man screaming about how they will all die and he will be rich every episode. They are clearly not presented in the same way despite both voting O.
Chalk it up to be a different type of greedy. Willing to have everyone die at one point to have enough money to have his dick chopped off.

We at kiwifarms view him as a pervert that wants to get people killed so he can flay his cock. The story presents him as a desperate person in need of medicine on par with the father trying to get money to treat his daughter's leukemia.

You Know the whole marine tattoo thing, does that mean that they were in the marines as a profession or is it just something that some people do during their military service? I’m leaning towards the latter given the dismissive "yeah I was in the airforce whatever" comment and how the younger marine guy had a mental breakdown.

I gotta say, the troon doesn't piss me off as much as the mom. The actress was great, and I enjoyed her scenes, but to say a woman that survived the Korean War, played games with bullet casings, grew up during a time of famine and a time when they were encouraging very large families, along with the Neo-Confucian society... To be instantly accepting of the troon is pure fantasy on Netflix's part.

>tranny character is played not by a "trans woman", nor a real woman, but an actual man
>character is visibly masculine and about twice the size of any of the other female contestants
>main qualities are being a manly military trained operator
>acts more manly than most of the male contestants when shit hits the fan
Is Hwang Dong-hyuk /ourguy/?

That troon character was a fucking mess, we just called him the guy with the long hair all throughout.

Of course there was the Thai ladyboy angle, which I was bitching about before he talked to it saying he didn’t need the money of the game to get a discount chop there.
And then when the troon was voting, he picked not to stop the game after deliberating what to vote, was laughing so hard because I knew he’d pick his stinkditch over everyone else there, and I was right.
Their fetish is always the most important thing.

That game where he kicked the tassel or whatever, apparently the reason he asked everyone to turn around was because “he still needs more procedures” aka his dong is flopping all over the place, nice.

The topper though was all of his male violence, he was more consistently violent than pretty much any other character since Snakeface is dead.
He smacked the shit out of that woman twice, bloodied her nose, then threatened to kill her with a spinning top.
Yes, that’s a woman’s woman that just wants to fit in with the gals.

And of course can’t forget him barreling like a linebacker through the carousel game grabbing people, and Army Hon showing everyone how (troon) girls get it done.

Genuinely my favorite character other than the main guy was that stupid SoundCloud rapper too, he was annoying as fuck but funny, especially when he’d break into random English to sound tough.

so the wife wanted me to get season 2 and she's like omg nownownownow so I'm like lol calm down it's not like they're gonna die or something
tbh glancing at it as she watches this seems like "Yet Another ROK Crime Drama, Also A Survival Game" more than "SURVIVAL GAME SHOW", maybe that's just the setup in the start of s2?

Why is it called Squid Games anyways? Wouldn't Crab Bucket Brawl be more fitting?

The final game was a child's game by the name, remember?
god, that was a good fucking scene, holy shit

I need to rewatch the first season again but skip all the cop sections.
But imagine how cool of a reveal it would be when you finally get to see what the classic korean childrens game Crab Bucket Brawl really is.
"Gih-Yen, this is a game we played growing up during that depressing era. I have a lot of fond memories of it. The ground is covered in broken glass and crabs, you're naked and covered in iodine, your shoes are replaced by buckets, buckets that will hold the crabs you catch. This was a popular game in the 50's. The proper method to play the game is to catch equal amounts of North Korean crabs and South Korean crabs and put them in the same bucket where they will brawl each other which will leave the players toes unpinched. That's why it is called Netflix's Crab Bucket Brawl."

Hero and evil guy can't tell the difference between nork crabs and SK crabs because they're too young and didn't grow up in the depressing era.

Hero catches two crabs, puts them in his bucket, they pinch his toes and he falls over into the glass. The crabs escape. He has no idea if they were NK or SK crabs. This is a hard game.
Evil guy figures out that if he sticks both feet in one bucket and jump to move he can hold the other one in his hands and his toes won't get pinched. He starts collecting crabs.
Hero finally gets up.
Hero suddenly realizes that he can stomp the crabs to death before putting them in the bucket. Toes will go unpinched. Flat crabs takes up less space.
He walks around faster than the evil guy that has to jump around and he quickly catches up.
Evil guy sees this and despairs, his only hope of winning is stomping crabs. But he would have to empty the bucket in his hands before he can put it on his stomping foot. He would have to start all over. This would put him at a disadvantage. Time is running out. So he smashes the hero with his bucket and they start fighting, eventually taking the fight down into the glass where they are getting pinched in the ass by angry crabs.

Just finished Season 2 today. God, what a mess. Episode 1 was absolutely fantastic and had me at the edge of my seat, and literally every episode after that was incrementally shittier. I knew when the tranny appeared it wouldn't be anywhere near as good as the original.

What bothered me the most was its tone; Squid Game always had humour, but it was contained to appropriate, understandable moments. What the show excelled in most was its humane portrayal of its characters and the relationships between them, but none of the side characters were as memorable as the first cast; again, I attribute this to the tonal shift. I thought Season 2 would have a sombre tone as Gi-Hun sacrifices everything to stop the games, and while he is a great character with some heroic moments, you can't get as invested as you would like in his arc as everyone around him feels like a caricature. I did enjoy his "friendship" with In-Ho however, and I found it oddly poignant that once again Gi-hun's good nature is taken advantage of by a controller of the games. Still, none of the side characters are as compelling as Sangwoo, Ali Abdul, Sae-byok or Oh Il-Nam, and there are no moments as fantastic as the Marble Game, Tug of War, Bridge, Sangwoo and Gi-hun's fight, etc.

Anyways, the acting carried this show hard; everyone gave a good performance except that incredibly obnoxious Thanos guy. I'll still watch Season 3 to see the resolution and the cop guy confront his brother, but like everyone else I agree that this season suffered badly from being obviously cut in half.

Also, why are so many of the characters recycled? Ruthless North Korean defector with a human side, overconfident asshole who ends up losing, quirky woman, etc. All of them are poor versions of the original cast, and the other players are too evil to take seriously. This season lacked the sense of humanity, tension and animal desperation that made the orignal so memorable.

Finished season 2 last night.

I actually kind of liked the troon character, so far as they dropped any pretense of passing as soon as things seemed serious (slapping and threatening to kill the shaman, barging through people during mingle, yelling like a drill sergeant to explain guns, commanding everyone during the finale). The character was clearly intended as just Netflix pandering but the actual actor played the part well. Unsurprised that redditors are swooning over him because of "uwu soft trans girl" though.

001/Front Man/In-ho clearly thought a great deal about how to play the role, I kept flip-flopping on whether he was being a master manipulator or slipping into the way he was when he first played the games.

Thanos was a fun villain, he and his lackey had some nice chemistry, particularly before the bathroom brawl. I was hoping he'd stick around longer, but seeing the crypto shill finally man up and take responsibility for himself and his child was a satisfying payoff. I was expecting the wimp-guy to do something similar, but him being forced to watch his crush get savagely killed in front of him is a fitting punishment for being a gigantic pussy.

Mother and son were fun.

Overall I think the season was pretty good, I am glad they didn't just do Squid Games 2.0 but instead tried to explore a different avenue - I was half expecting them to majorly gaslight Gi-hun and simply not kill anyone in the first game.

Also, have seen rumours going around that Season 3 will be released in June, apparently Netflix Korea leaked this by accident. I'd rather they just released it all at once as Season 3 is clearly supposed to be Season 2 part 2, I figured this is just hype-building fuckery on the part of Netflix rather than the creator.

I feel like after this show ends, the milking is going to be pretty obnoxious and there will be nothing that can really compare.

I will place my bets (really low just in case) that if an America live action remake comes out, they'll use the same Korean children's games, though hopefully they'll use American ones given how little sense it would make.

My other prediction is they won't even have the option to end the game, since the best thing about both seasons of Squid Game is how the games could end at any point and in the first season they did which is really refreshing for a death game show, while the second season had players keep playing just because of the greed of characters like Thanos and 100.

So, like, without spoiling anything ... Is Season 2 worth it? The trailers haven't impressed me. They've given me "been there done that" vibes.

I really liked the first season (though it's not perfect-- I have a few gripes), but I thought that the ending felt pretty final, complete, and satisfying ... Kind of like how the first Matrix movie ended, if that makes sense. The endings to both are open ended enough for the studios to milk them to death, I guess. We all know how the Matrix sequels turned out ... I don't want to waste my time if Squid Game 2 is just a retread of what we have seen before.

You're probably better off waiting for the 3rd season, because as it is, you're not going to be left satisfied.
