This shouldn't be a hobby. None of this should be a pastime anyone partakes in. You shouldn't even be able to type those two paragraphs, to have a conversation about this topic. Anyone doing any of this has stalled at or missed a crucial developmental stage. This is acute arrested development and it should be seen as capital-w Wrong for adults to still be doing Play Pretend like this. Even writing "fanfic" outside the scope of "fantasy script and maybe someday I'll get hired to write on a real TV show" needs to be considered a genuine symptom of mental deficiency.
He's right y'know.
Shippers are infamous for getting weird about pairings they disfavour.
I think it's because many of them use their shipping to experience romance by proxy.
Presumably due to a natural deficiency of romance in their diet, so to speak.
Fanfics in general are a mixed bag; It's been literally twenty years since I've read one, I'd seen people get their start in fanfics, mature as a writer, and develop their own settings and characters that they could call their own.
But they were the vast minority.
Most pack it in after realizing the limitations of their own writing.
Some never reach that realization, and carry on penning Angry Beavers yaoi slashfics or some shit until they're old and grey.
The latter of course, tend to be on the spectrum, which dovetails nicely with the fixation element.
Fanfiction writers should be encouraged to write their own shit.
A terrible fanfic can only be a terrible fanfic.
But a terrible original novel is at least still original.
- The Tired Cat probably writes Lemon fics about Grandpa Pickles and Nigel Thornberry having rampant old man sex.
Just my utterly baseless gutfeel.
