Jan 5 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce as early as Monday that he will resign as Liberal Party Leader, The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday, citing three sources.

The sources told the Globe and Mail that they don't know definitely when Trudeau will announce his plans to leave but said they expect it will happen before a key national caucus meeting on Wednesday.

The Canadian prime minister's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.

It remains unclear whether Trudeau will leave immediately or stay on as prime minister until a new leader is selected, the report added.

Trudeau took over as Liberal leader in 2013 when the party was in deep trouble and had been reduced to third place in the House of Commons for the first time.

Trudeau's departure would leave the party without a permanent head at a time when polls show the Liberals will badly lose to the Conservatives in an election that must be held by late October.

His resignation is likely to spur fresh calls for a quick election to put in place a government able to deal with the administration of President-elect Donald Trump for the next four years.

The prime minister has discussed with Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc whether he would be willing to step in as interim leader and prime minister, one source told the newspaper, adding that this would be unworkable if LeBlanc plans to run for the leadership.

rip bozo. still, it's hard to call this an L given how long he's maintained power. even with his massive unpopularity, it's taken this long for him to finally get the fuck out. reminder that the whole thing where he was unpersoning protesters over the vaccine mandate was three years ago this month. he basically gave the finger to a significant portion of the Canadian electorate and still kept cruising until now. and he's not being thrown out, he's basically just retiring, probably to avoid a big political loss, but also without taking one. Cucknadians stay losing.

His resignation is likely to spur fresh calls for a quick election to put in place a government able to deal with the administration of President-elect Donald Trump for the next four years.

lol what does this mean? deal with the Trump administration? why could Canada of all countries be in any kind of political situation due to Trump being elected?

Can someone just explain something to me; Why now? This retard has been constantly making things worse for 10 years now, and for some reason, after all the wildfires that went unaddressed, the trucker protests, the Chinese investors buying all the houses, etc. After all this retarded shit, now, a possible tariff war with the US, is what causes him to go down in flames?
The Liberal caucus has been losing strongholds left and right, that's why. Add in Freeland’s resignation that successfully painted him as a nieve idiot that throws others under the bus, and he was done for.

The panic over a tariff war just gave other officials incentive to yell that he needed to go.

Rev up the salty tweets, I'm planning on over dosing on salt today
I don't think anyone actually likes Justo by this point, even the liberals hate him for his awful leadership and allowing the cost of living/housing to explode exponentially out of control while the country's economy stalls. All Justo has done since 2019 is throw free money at people and import jeets while providing absolutely no leadership or vision.

Fantastic.
Now you can take him to court for all the crimes he committed while in office.
So who has the best chance at becoming the new PM?
This guy will be the next PM:

I wonder if the Liberal party will go through a leader crisis like the conservatives did for a bit in the COVID era? I hope they do because I think it’ll be the final thing we need for the Snap Election that we Canadians are DESPERATE for.

Trudeau to resign as prime minister after Liberal leadership race

PM asked Governor General to prorogue Parliament until March 24

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he plans to step down once the Liberal Party has chosen a successor, bringing his time leading the country to a tumultuous end.

Trudeau, who became Liberal leader in 2013 and prime minister in the fall of 2015, announced his long-awaited decision outside his official residence, Rideau Cottage, on Monday morning.

Trudeau also said he asked Gov. Gen. Mary Simon to prorogue Parliament until March 24, and she granted the request.

The father of three said he told his children that he intended to leave the country's top job over dinner Sunday night.

"This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it's become clear to me that if I'm having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election," he told reporters.

Trudeau's decision will set off a competitive leadership race to replace him and find a contender to take on the Liberals' key rival, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, in the next federal election.

Trudeau said he's already asked the Liberal Party president to begin a "robust" and "nationwide" process to find the next leader.

"The Liberal Party of Canada is an important institution in the history of our great country and democracy. A new prime minister and leader of the Liberal party will carry its values and ideals into the next election," he said.

"I'm excited to see the process unfold in the months ahead."

Trudeau has been under mounting pressure to resign amid sinking public opinion polling, including from his own caucus.

At least two dozen individual MPs and several regional caucuses — including Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ontario — have called for him to step down since before the holiday break.

His political future was put into a tailspin when Chrystia Freeland, long seen as his top lieutenant, resigned as finance minister and deputy prime minister last month, the day she was scheduled to present the fall economic statement.

Conservatives threaten non-confidence motion

In a letter to Trudeau that was subsequently posted to social media, Freeland said she had no choice but to resign after Trudeau approached her about moving her to another cabinet role.

Freeland also took a jab at Trudeau's handling of the economy, denouncing what she called the government's "costly political gimmicks" and imploring him to work collaboratively with the country's premiers to take on U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's tariffs threat.

She went on to write that she and Trudeau have been "at odds" in recent weeks about how to handle the incoming U.S. administration.

The Conservatives, which have been riding high in the polls for more than a year, have promised to move a motion of non-confidence in the Liberal government as soon as possible in the new year.

He's under numerous scandals and investigations, a full blown cabinet revolt and is a weak minority leader with purportedly every other party voting no-confidence at the next possible opportunity. Also a fringe legal theory that a confidence motion can be brought through committee.

Liberal party and WEF would rather watch the national economy burn under Trump tarrifs and that is lol until it is not.
