Around here, junkies steal the caps off of the fire hydrants to sell for scrap prices. Sometimes shit gets clogged up with the cap missing, but beyond that I'm not sure.

ETA: So they're actually taking entire fire hydrants, eh? They must really want their fix.

The goats that they used to send in alongside community service workers to clear areas where forest and the suburbs met, did more for stopping dry brush from burning up into wildfires than anything else, because the dry ground is essentially a combination of dry pine needles, mixed in with deciduous plants. You might burn an area near urban and suburban environments, but the clearance and management is enough to keep it in a smaller area. From what I could glean by being around the environment enough, these dry plant bits are perfect fodder for flame to move around.

I miss the goat man who used to come around. It was proof positive that old wisdom is better than new technology. That's probably why I haven't seen him.

They aren't kidding when they say "worst case situation. It's not a firestorm in a dense city Ala Tokyo, April 1945. But it's among the worst seen in North America since the 19th Century. There just isn't much the firefighters can do beyond evacuate people. Even when they have water pressure, that don't really have enough to fight this very effectively.

If I read correctly, the State normally draws down the water levels in the reservoirs Dec-Feb in order to make room for the spring thaw coming down from the mountains. The problem is they never finished building the additional reservoirs that their water management plan was designed for.

And I'm going to say, as someone who has spent time in California and Los Angeles specifically: no they fucking aren't and no it is not. LA is a part of America in the same sense that a tumor is a part of your body. I have been virtually everywhere in America because I love America and I cannot think of a place more deserving of total destruction except Portland. There's nobody there who isn't complicit in the ethos it embodies.
