Neighborhood fires typically spread from roof to roof. The shingles used on most US residential roofs are asphalt and flammable. When that storm of embers starts to land on the neighboring roofs, those houses are doomed as well unless they have a metal roof or another niche material.

It’s compounding and it will get worse and worse the bigger and more spread out the fires get. The acceleration makes sense because there’s more flaming ember in the air. Arson is always an option but it’s perfectly reasonable it’s all organic
