So fun fact, all of these burning structures emit VOCs and micro particulate matter. They are invisible and with few only becoming detectible by the olifactory senses when you have minutes to evacuate. Even if you manage to escape it within minutes you will become disoriented, and exhausted. They are mostly heavier than air. Consumer gas masks require a specialized cartridge to filter formaldehyde which is the most common from burning wooden structures, and most activated carbon isn't helpful. The same goes for car air filters.

If you are anywhere near these fires or even down wind from one, evacuate immediately. You probably won't realize your exposure levels until it's too late.

But that top head of the hydrant isn't really holding the Valve in place. Or rather it works the opposite of what you seem to be saying. If the top part of the hydrant is removed the valve will fail in a closed state. The top "penis head" of the hydrant is the solid brace that lets you push down on the valve mechanism with the screw shaft to hold it open.

I've never seen a non-frost proof hydrant in person, but I thought the valve was in the bottom of the barrel. All I know is I'm not touching anything attached to a 200 psi water main with out the isolation valve(s) being locked out. Then again, I'm not a tweaker. A fire systems contractor pressure tested a sprinkler feed line without filling it with water first and that was more than enough excitement for me.

Nothing today was the firefighters fault.

I know it’s been said to death but I don’t really like shitting on the misfortunes of innocent people. Yes even people I disagree with on politics. I am sure some of these people have a skeleton or two in their closets but the majority are probably fine. Yep LA is a hell-hole because of constant mismanagement from what I am told. I still feel for the people there.

That said and I am sure somebody already posted it, I don’t care. Here might be the solution to all our problems.

I'm heading over to help a friend survey the damage to his area, as a large portion of his neighborhood burnt down. Part of my emergency gear includes a leash for any potentially in need critter. I'll keep you kiwis updated on the devastation. The wind has basically stopped, and the air quality is marginally better.

Finally back, the devastation is almost impossible to put into words. The affected areas look like the War of the Worlds, countless buildings that I recognized reduced to rubble and fire. Cars melted down to the chassis, every socioeconomic level of housing transformed into unrecognizable piles of smoldering ash, debris everywhere, smoke so thick that Silent Hill would look like Miami, and billions of dollars of damage.
Against all odds, my friends tiny ass 1 bedroom house was completely untouched. Everywhere for at least at thousand feet in every direction was utterly obliterated, and we were completely dumbfounded. As we were loading the car, a fireman stopped to make sure we weren't looters. He was on the detail for that block from the night before, and straight up told us "that area was so violently engulfed in fire that we wrote it all off as destroyed".
My buddy is a bit of an atheist, but he's even he's convinced it was some sort of miracle.
It's hell on earth, and we should all take note of our fragility and weakness in comparison to the raw naked power of nature.
To everyone cheering on the devastation, I sincerely hope that you get raped to death by an elephant.

They've been around on and off for the past five years here and are not anything recent, so I very much so doubt their absence has any connection to this. But I did make a point to check for them throughout the night and didn't see a single one.
