This catastrophe should not come as a surprise. For years California refused to do controlled burns to help manage fires. And it didn't keep the reservoirs filled when it rained. Despite southern CA getting a good amount of rain over the past few years it didn't clear the resulting extreme plant growth which has now dried out creating a massive fire hazard. Meteorologists warned that a 'recipe for fire' was on track to strike LA. Nonetheless, as has been mentioned, the mayor slashed the fire department budget last year by $17.6M - her original budget proposal sought to cut $23 million.
The LA Fire Chief warned in the weeks before the fires that the decision to cut the department's budget would diminish its ability to prepare for and respond to large scale emergencies. "The reduction... has severely limited the department's capacity to prepare for, train for, and respond to large-scale emergencies, including wildfires," Chief Kristin Crowley wrote in a memo dated Dec. 4, 2024.

This shit is horrible and I really weep for the normal people who are going to die or lose everything from this fire, but all too expected from a state like California. Slight PL and sperg ahead, but I grew up in California and then moved to a Tornado alley (Red) state and it's wild how disaster preparedness is treated differently in Cali vs there. There's a fire every. fucking. year in some part of California, if not multiple and their only real attempt to do anything to curb it is to shit out a few dozen more Smokey the Bear ads begging you "PLEAAAASE DONT START A FOREST FIRE". I can totally believe the reservoir thing where the people vote for them to be made but the governor/leadership is so addicted to the smell of their own farts that they just spend more time pushing DEI social justice shit and giving into the demands of insane environmentalists instead of trying to put in measures that would save people's lives in times like this. Acres of beautiful land, animals and people are all constantly lost and Newsom and people like this shitty mayor don't care.
But in a Tornado alley state every fucking building either has a storm shelter outright or a safe place to hide, it was a culture shock when I moved to another state and there were no storm shelters to be found. Tornado preparedness is drilled into your brains from a very young age and you would do Tornado drills in school like you would do fire drills and you get advised practically everywhere that you should keep emergency supplies and radios in case of emergencies. Because the state governments actually understand how to educate people on these things, and actually put in the effort to provide safety measures to their people, you only ever hear of a few people dying at a time from a Tornado despite how nasty they get, short of like a Greensburg KS or Joplin MO Tornado that just obliterates whole towns. I understand a Tornado is not the same thing as a wildfire but for as frequently as it happens, especially how bad these fires get, you would think the politicians would see that letting children and meemaws and peepaws burn to death every year because they don't want to dig a reservoir or cut down a few acres of trees looks fucking bad to the rest of the civilized world, but no it's totally just global warming you guize, it's not our fault we're basically the only state with this problem!
