if cut off from the rest of the states, they would start to experience hunger and starvation because none of the feed crops they grow ( feed corn and soy) are suitable for human consumption. the vast majority of midwest production is for feeding animals and what's left over is mostly for industrial use. this isn't an argument for the wokeness of california, only that the US agriculture industry works with government to centralize production in the worst ways possible.
