Dowry (Paying the groom to take the bride) as opposed to bride price (Paying for the bride) emerges from societies who have histories where women don't really contribute agriculturally or economically. They're instead seen as financial burdens, so a dowry is basically some compensation to the groom's family for taking the bride off her family's hands. By contrast, bride price compensates the bride's family for the loss of labor and for the loss of the woman herself. Bride price has always been a more intuitive idea to me from a modern perspective, since it would seem the bride's family gets a pretty raw deal by essentially losing a family member, but this thread can already attest to the low value India ascribes to women.

This is quite confusing. If anything, I'd expect jeets to be forcing women into marriage. There's gotta be more to the story than just going after men with good jobs. It's gotta be some bizarro world way to elevate their caste status, or some similar jeet nonsense.

You're modernity-brained. In ancient cultures, women are a burden on a man's family. They produce children sure, but what use is a woman to a man when she has already produced children? Women cannot do much of the necessary work in an agricultural society and so cannot often justify their own existence once childbearing is finished. If all men wanted were children, they could simply reproduce with women outside of marriage.

Dowries are also an alternative to an inheritance. In societies where women do not inherit wealth, this is often the only wealth they will ever receive from their parents (even if indirectly). The ability of a woman to provide a dowry is similar to how one might not want to marry a jobless womanchild if you're living in modernity. Whether or not it's actually valuable is besides the point - the dowry is part of the status and being unable to provide one makes you less desirable than a woman that can provide one. It's the same idea as not wanting to marry a bum woman even if you're prepared to fully financially support her.

There's typically a strong negative correlation between the economic independence of women and the existence of dowries. Dowries are almost unheard of in Anglo societies because English laws and norms going back to the middle ages typically allowed for the inheritance of wealth by women. Thus women would often bring wealth into the marriage via the death of their parents rather than when the marriage actually takes place. Also, all of this is upstream of the nuclear family because intergenerational wealth is naturally diluted in such a system (more inheritors, smaller individual inheritances) and thus the existence of large, cohesive families is not favored over the economic flexibility of smaller family units.

My wording was a little hyperbolic but it is worth expanding on. In societies with large extended families, there are usually more than enough women milling around to do these tasks. The marginal value of each additional woman was not very high. You can even see this in modern Indian families where you're not simply taking care of your husband, but his brothers and his father and if you have children you take care of your sons even into their adulthood after they marry. Women are more tightly-coupled together in households so their individual value goes down. As a woman marrying in, the other women are more likely to see you as a scab taking away their meager justification for existing rather than someone providing value.

In sparsely populated Europe where arable land was plentiful and calories were easy to get, women were more desirable because the relative cost of feeding them was low and families were not as large so there were fewer of them present doing "womens' work" in the household (a man was probably not able to rely on his sister-in-law for help around the house for example). In pre-modern India, people lived much closer to the limits of subsistence agriculture (and even still do today - Indian agriculture is famously low-productivity) and so a person who could not actively contribute to growing food tipped the scales much more sharply than they would in Europe.

As with all things, economics play a big role. Very few cultures are 'pure' dowry ones - in periods where the supply of eligible women becomes constrained, they often switch to bride prices instead. Ancient Greece had such a switch several times throughout its history, and China is another civilization where dowries and bride prices swapped in and out of fashion. Most of the time though, men were in much shorter supply than women due to men not being particularly good at the whole 'staying alive' thing.

And in modern India, dowries definitely do not make sense. Female infanticide and sex-selective abortion have led to a gender imbalance that should strongly favor women. But these kinds of institutions are very stubborn and the Brahmin elite is very attached to the idea of dowries (and hating women).

IMO the reason why there are so many jeet scammers is because they have American overseas jobs with American customer information or if they're in the states the information gets sent back to the scam centers in India.

As we see more lower caste pajeets get imported into western countries, we're seeing the rise in sex, and drug crimes. The higher caste jeets that are smart enough to get into tech, security, customer service etc... do the white collar crimes.

Westerners are not prepared for 3 world scammers (not just Indians/Paki's). It's part of their culture and few westerners understand this.
