I just finished going through this thread, and all I can think is, holy shit, I can't believe how amazingly stupid yet horrifying Emily is. There's a lot going on in this thread, but I’d like to contribute something I didn’t see brought up: Emily is clearly living in some sort of assisted living facility. I’ve seen a lot of people ask, “Where on earth is her guardian or wrangler? Why haven’t they removed her internet access yet?”
Minor powerlevel here, but at one point in my life, I worked as a wrangler at one of these facilities, so I can offer some insight into why they haven’t taken Emily’s computer away. While specific rules vary between facilities, it’s generally established nowadays that internet access is considered a basic right, much like having a safe living environment or the ability to report abuse or neglect. As someone who often had to deal with the fallout of this “freedom,” I can’t stress enough how frustrating it was when someone acted as recklessly as Emily and people like me had to clean up the mess.
For example, I once helped oversee a person (who I’ll keep vague for obvious reasons) who obsessively posted on Facebook about how everyone was out to get him. He would harass people online and cause all kinds of problems. Even though I was well aware of his behavior, I wasn’t allowed to intervene. Things came to a head when, one day, a police officer showed up at our facility. Apparently, this person had used Facebook to make violent threats against a random woman in town, who understandably called the cops. The officer at that point wasn't really allowed to do much more than sit him down and ask him to stop.
I remember asking my boss if there was any way to limit his internet access to prevent further incidents. My boss told me, “No, that would infringe on his rights. He bought the phone and the mobile plan, and we’re not allowed to take it away from him, even if he is doing really questionable things with them.”
This ultimately resulted in police showing up several more times over the next few weeks due to his constant threats online. You have no idea how frustrating it was to deal with cops repeatedly showing up, telling him, “Can you please stop doing that?”, him ignoring them, and me having to explain the situation to the police yet again. And you can bet that every single time, I would have the same argument with my boss and get told the same thing (despite my boss agreeing with me that letting him on the internet unrestricted was a terrible idea). It didn’t stop until Facebook finally banned his account for the constant threats, and he was too dumb to figure out how to register a new account.
I guess my point with this story is this: I am 99.9% sure that the staff at Emily's facility are fully aware of her internet activities and constant stalking and harassment. I wouldn’t be shocked if they share similar sentiments about wanting to get her off the internet. Unfortunately, they’re probably not allowed to because it "infringes on her rights", even though I’m sure most of them would love to smash her PC with a hammer.
