I never quite understood why Newsom was a powerful figure within the Democratic party/why he was frequently floated as a Democrat presidential contender (like, there were apparently high ranking Democrats who wanted him to run in place of Kamala). Anyone with basic critical thinking skills can look at California, see how much of a mismanaged sh!thole the state currently is, and realize it's the result of the policies he represents. Like, if the Democratic party is serious about winning, they shouldn't be reminding voters that Democrats run California.

The cope I saw from the left in the last days of and right after the election was that he’s a scummy neoliberal corrupt piece of shit, but that also lets him be a smooth backroom operator that would be the left’s Donald, a guy who really doesn’t actually stand for anything and is just out for himself, but who will force their team back into power, after which they can fix it from the inside I guess.

I’m honestly surprised the numbers are this low, but I suppose it’s not exactly safe to go looking for final numbers yet.

For a wildfire, 24 dead (presumably 40 depending on how pessimistic you are) before the flames are even halfway done is pretty fucking severe, ain’t it? I remember most fires barely having death tolls past the double digits with maybe three exceptions (Chicago and two especially bad Australian bush fires, I think?), but I haven’t checked recently so maybe I’m misremembering…
