Audience engagement seems higher with reactors who (initially) cam up. Personal connection, etc. You therefore have to be willing to at least start off on-cam (which of course puts your personal life at risk.)

Once successful, you may then go off-cam on the grounds of (1) broken camera, (2) camera-free laptop, (3) needing to keep up with chat (still don't understand this one, unless you spend the whole time looking at yourself, which might be the case with certain reactors who are sensitive about their necks).

Alternative strategies: (Continuously) tighten the frame to remove unsatisfactory body parts (e.g., Charlie Gold); stream using Judgement/Hell House lighting and/or near-darkness (see Yaba). Filters!

#2 Autobiography
Audience engagement seems higher with reactors who incorporate their personal lives into their reactions. Rapport with audience, common ground (with intent to contrast with target).

Problem: Obviously, risk of exposure. Additionally, risk of revealing common traits with target, rather than opposition (e.g.,weight issues, issues of attractiveness, etc.)

Alternative strategies: Lie about yourself (NB: keep up with lies told, to maintain consistency).

#3 Encouraging audience "sharing"
Audience engagement will be higher if you encourage the audience to "open up" about themselves (e.g., birthdays, other significant events).

Problem: This will lead to "trauma dumping." And this has been a problem for FFG from the beginning. In her first or second livestream,a chatter Donald Duck starts carrying on about her husband raping her. She may have been the first Gorl Gang person to get the boot, then took her grievances and grief to other chats.

Additionally, there is the problem of the reactor "trauma dumping." It's hard for me to see why FFG is permitted to be a bummer (dead mom, dead dogs, etc.), soaks up sympathy and money from the audience, then denies others the space to vent.

The other problem -- maybe the main problem -- is you have to be interested in other people -- their lives, their problems, etc. FFG is not. Nor Yaba.

They're not even interested in Chantal, outside of validation.

If you abstract away from the stream-internal phrases (BUTT STUFF! FUNCLE BRAIN! TABERNAK! CUTIE! FAKE MUSLIM!), there's actually very little content in their streams. At this point, they're their own soundboards, rather like those sitcoms where a character introduced a successful catchphrase (DY-NO-MITE!), which becomes their dominant feature.

(Or why she assumed Chantal would be renting from a place that has a website -- a quick search of the neighborhood shows there are plenty of vendors who don't.)

The car is listed at a rate of 7KWD. Someone asks Yaba what the rate is for (daily, weekly, etc.) I guess Yaba didn't pull up Google translate, bc it's the daily rate if you lease/rent the car for a year.

There's also confusion about whether Chantal is renting from a private owner. The vehicle owner is Kuwait Car Rental Development Company (link), which -- like a lot of small businesses, it seems -- advertises on Opensooq, rather than having a personally maintained website).

Yaba assumes the stickers indicate it's a rental vehicle. I'd thought there had been some discussion last year about a Kuwait habit of leaving the vendor stickers up as a flex. From Reddit:

So, the stickers (and the plastic, and probably the floor mat, which caused some controversy) do not necessarily tell you whether the vehicle has been purchased or rented (unless someone has a better shot).

I considered eligibility for vehicle ownership. Salah likely meets the requirements, including for financing. And lo, a dealership that sells used Tiggos, with financing options (link). And a (representative) dealership that leases vehicles (link).

I do find it hilarious that Yaba's community on Twitter is now confident that Chantal is spending $12K (Canadian dollars -- $8K US) to rent a vehicle, based on Yaba's Google search and her command of English (I don't believe she ran any of the Arabic through Google translate. And there's plenty of it).

Which is not to say that Chantal is not renting their vehicle (or leasing it).
