IIRC he took a plea deal with the feds so his federal conviction would be served concurrently with his Floyd charge. I also think the fed charge was acting as a deterrent to stop him appealing his case because it wouldn't result in him searving a lower sentence.
It did work in Trump’s favor, though. Most of the discourse is on whether it was a Nazi salute or not, instead of Trump’s actions.
