He had likely just been put through rehab and chemical assessment as part of the CPS process to get his kids back. I'm also certain that they would have made stuff with the kids much more difficult if had tried to push his way through denying any drug use. All his self-delusion that he could bluff his way through CPS and the criminal court pretending he had never used cocaine was over.
