Taking bets now that Kjel and El Nino have basically fucked themselves out of being eligible for Bay Area rents because they give themselves tiny nominal on-paper salaries to minimize how much of their sweet tranny bux get taxed as income; landlords can't, don't, and shouldn't be asking what your charity is making per year, what they can ask is for pay stubs or equivalent actual, on-paper income verification so they know you can pay the fucking bill. This is a side effect of using your charity as a slush fund, sweethearts.
And yes, landlords are assholes in California and, prior to signing the lease, get away with it. California LLT law is so eldritch and involuted that you can't just casually glance at it and know your rights as a tenant, and it's a renter's market so they can afford to tell people to fuck off if they don't like the initial terms. Judges and the actual law tend to be more tenant-friendly, so it's easier to be selective up front and maybe eat a DFEH complaint (wrist slap) than it is to deal with having a property off the market for six months+ fighting a goddamn UD because the tenant's flakier than an overcooked croissant.
