In terms of fruit picking when I was growing up it was a family event to go to the "you pick" orchards to collect up fruit yourself (and pay for the privilege!). We'd pick pounds and pounds of the stuff as a family then spend the next weekend canning, and freezing our haul plus making some pies and such.
Perhaps small farms should just bring that back while looking for seasonal American workers.
