the civil war was a war about the federal government's power over the states, not about whether or not it's okay for lincoln to take away your slaves. the emancipation proclamation was issued mid-war as a way to damage the confederate warfighting effort, because lincoln himself only cared about slaves insofar as they they were a tool to utilize or wield in a certain way to keep the union together, which was his task. like him or not, the war was not started over slavery, it was started over what the removal of slavery would have implied about state rights vs the federal government.
