However in the article from two days ago he says he is only "part time military" and works a full time job in the private sector. So I assume he's still in the reserves, and not in that active duty battalion.

As people are pointing out in the replies, there's no source for that paragraph, and the troon is clearly in the Army National Guard, not the Army, as per that article.
