Upfront, I don't mind left-of-center subtext in a good game but the operative word there is *GOOD*. I don't play games because I require an additional outlet to be bombarded and beat over the head with propaganda, even if I agree with it. I can literally find a politically compatible 3 Minute Hate in seconds online, if I'm so inclined. I play games to have fun, and if I play a fun game that has political subtext I agree with, cool; if I play a game with no political subtext at all, cool; and if I play a fun game that has subtext I don't agree with politically, cool and also who fucking cares as long as it's fun? I'd rather play a FUN game with politics I completely, absolutely abhor, than a shitty, unfun, unenjoyable game with the best political takes I've ever seen because I am consuming this media for an entirely different purpose, and with an entirely different mindset, than I consume political punditry or whatever with.
I played Dustborn for a bit to see what everyone was hollering about online. The faux-comic book art style is kinda neat, but it is a bad game. I know this makes me a "bad leftist" at best or "literally a Nazi, completely indistinguishable from Adolf Hitler" at worst, but I'm sorry: fire is hot, water is wet, Bernie would've won and Dustborn fucking sucks dick as both entertainment and political commentary. It's ostensibly a game, but it isn't fun, the characters aren't engaging and, to be completely honest, I suffered some pretty severe "Representation Fatigue" during it. Remember when, a decade ago during actual Gamergate, a big talking point on the left/anti-gg side of the debate was that every game seemingly had a white dude as the protagonist and that this was really boring and same-y and sometimes non-white people and women want to play characters that look like them or whatever? Fine, okay, I have zero problem with a game letting you choose your characters ethnicity or sex (this has been an option in video games for nearly, if not more than, 40 years). I won't even get my pussy in a twist if a game has a hard-coded non-white/female main character (again, as long as the game is actually FUN). For example, I think both Tig Ol' Biddies OG 90's Tomb Raider is fun and so is newer, "crypto-pajeet/IBTC member Lara Croft"-era Tomb Raider. But nowadays, it seems like Every. Single. Fucking. Game. that comes out (especially the "critically acclaimed" ones that anyone to the left of center is not allowed to dislike and that seem to have been created to be a political shibboleth rather a fun way to pass time) has Badass Queer Black Girl With Undercut as the main character and it's really getting boring as fuck.
What's worse is that, while a majority of past games hadwhite dudes as the main character, it was an incidental thing -- the developers didn't go into it with a mindset of "we need to enhance white dude visibility and representation". They just made a game and the main character was a white dude because they probably grew up watching Star Wars or Terminator or whatever sci-fi/action franchise that also had a white dude as the lead, so they were just referencing the shit they grew up with that influenced them -- but with these games, it's always VERY intentional (to the point it seems like the devs start with a political take and try to make a game out of it, rather than making a fun game and adding political subtext) and usually comes across as really preachy, ham-fisted and honestly, I'm a woman and feel kind of infantilized and condescended to by the way a lot of newer female characters are portrayed (and I'd imagine, if they were being honest with themselves and not just playing political football, most Black gamers would agree re: Black characterization in these sorts of games). Personally, I like flawed characters; humans are flawed, and a character being flawed is relatable and seeing them overcome their flaws is inspirational. But heaven fucking forbid a game have a flawed woman, or a flawed gay person, or a flawed Black person or, shock! horror! worst of all, a flawed gay Black woman as a character because the immediate kneejerk is always that this is somehow meant as commentary about the groups being represented as a whole rather than the devs simply trying to make an interesting, realistic, multi-faceted character that can actually experience growth during the course of the game.
For example, Pax (Dustborn's token Badass Queer Black Girl With Undercut)'s only "flaw" is that (according to the devs) she's "cynical about politics' -- other than that, she is a maximally woke, extremely intelligent, witty, talented, fashionable, hip, conventionally attractive (if you're into that sort of thing, I mean) badass who is good at everything, has no discernible weaknesses, doesn't take shit from anyone and would kill and/or die for her friends; the living avatar of #TrustBlackWomen; #BlackGirlMagic made flesh (a real Markeesha Sue, if you will) -- but even this "cynicism" is presented in a very homogenized, "unproblematic", "wow so true leftist bestie" way. For example, the game takes place in a right wing dystopian America (because of course it does; the only dystopian narratives allowed are either "basically Fallout" or "literally The Handmaid's Tale"), and Pax's "political cynicism" isn't "every political movement claims to be on the side of justice and progress, but they've all gone on to commit unspeakable atrocities all throughout human history in the supposed pursuit of their version of "justice" and "progress", so why should I think the current state of affairs is some kind of special outlier? "This is the worst things have ever been?" Puh-leeze. As bad as things are, give me 5 minutes and a history book and I'll find you a dozen examples of things being even worse" or "the American Left and Right's inability to find common ground -- and indeed, making the very concept of seeking common ground verboten -- eventually lead to extreme polarization that was obviously going to turn out to be very dark no matter who came out on top; it just so happens the Right won, but this could just as easily have been the Left". It's "actually, JFK (and other historical white leftists) would've been a [insert Dustborn's American Nazi analogue here] if they were alive today." Apparently "politically cynical" is 2050 Fascist America speak for "farts out faux-intellectual deepities that sound like an edgy 15 year old that discovered both Vaush and r/politics on the same day".
TL;DR Dustborn is terrible, anyone legitimately mad that people don't like Dustborn is mentally retarded and in the immortal paraphrased words of Hank Hill, "you aren't making leftism better, you're just making video games worse".
