I'm scared by the idea that Indian society just rolled the dice poorly, and that any society could have been, or still could be, overtaken by a similar strain of degeneracy.
Just to give an example, through my work I encounter a lot of rednecks, white trash, hicks, what have you. I encounter people who constantly reek of human feces. A nearby courthouse regularly hears cases of child abuse, drug possession, and small theft. People litter, have little sense of hygiene, a fair few walk around drunk in public; they pay no heed to either their own health, the health of their families, or the health and beauty of their local environment. These people reproduce, scheme, leech, and generally cause a nuisance wherever they are allowed to fester. Local schools are terrible: they are mismanaged, can't retain qualified teachers, and are indeed so desperate for substitutes that literal morons who struggle with basic addition could get part-time teaching jobs with a minimum of effort, amd because of this the only people learning anything are the few bright kids going through advanced programs at a somewhat distant community college. Multiple properties within city limits are overgrown and near-destroyed, and the town government does nothing significant to punish the offending property owners.
Combine this shit with the actual Jeets and it feels like the little town I've come to know is teetering on the edge of - not collapse, but terminal degeneration. The saving grace is, this hasn't reached critical mass as it has in India, and even if it does, the decay of one town is not the fall of society.
Still, it's like some banal adaptation of Lovecraft: "The thing will haunt me, for who can say the extermination is complete, and that analogous phenomena do not exist all over the world?" In short, I fear that even if Lovecraft had got his way and India was fumigated, we'd still need to fear the emergence of Jeet-adjacent phenomena.
