It's frustrating when he shits on genuinely good indy stuff like Valheim (or literally anything with building/survival mechanics) but at least he can see the ADD/Tism divide. In general all I need from synth is his keen eye for dissecting slop.

Some self-awareness, introspection, and humility would go a long way for him. It may be his job to be obnoxious, but that doesn't mean you can't react to it.

If you are good with half baked Unreal Engine 3rd person over the shoulder action-shooters full of safe edgy quipping written by globalist millennial women and rife with memory leaks then for fucks sake find another thread. The man does a service by showing us all just how bad it has gotten.

I hate them, in fact. I'm squarely on the 'tismgame side. Millenials and earlier have this false binary between Last of Us 2-type moviegames and instant gratification action/platformers like Mario & DMC that I completely reject. There's a third option, which is in ludo like Skyrim, Morrowind, RDR2, Mount & Blade, Caves of Qud, Civ 5 (and hopefully Civ 7 but it's not looking promising), CK2 & Vic2, Path of Achra, Exanima, and many others that embrace the true potential of games as an artistic medium, not treating them like deficient movies or coin-eating arcade machines.
I'm honest about the fact that the above is my subjective opinion, and while I do believe that it is correct I have some humility about that. I've played and appreciated moviegames and babygames both. The problem is that Synth isn't disciplined enough to properly make his elitist opinions qualified ones. He hits the right targets but he's directionally incorrect, and just too goddamn immature.

Yeah, I think this is what motivates a lot of posts, a lot of super chats, etc. People just wanting to steer the ship, to chime in. Honestly I would rather a creator be motivated by the urge to say something or engage in some activity than by narcissism, insanity, thrill seeking... Though I suppose all of those elements are present to some extent. Sometimes I want to do it and I have the requisite skills already but I'm incapable of half measures and I know I would spend too much on equipment, spend too much time upfront, then get bored and quit two months later.... and God help me if I ever did such a thing and actually found traction, it would probably ruin my life.

Same. I like the engineering games, supply chain and logistics, management sim stuff. I like my slow, immersive, grindy survival/exploration/collection games when paired with a podcast or a book. Even straight up German tier Farming/Truck sim shit is great with am audio book. I paint map a bit but Civ/Stellaris is about as much as I can tolerate. I used to play more FPS online and I still play 'the hot 3rd person game of the season' (Helldivers 2, 40K). I get my competitive fix from racing most of the time though.

I don't even disagree CyberPunk, KCD:1, The Witcher 3, RDR2, Half Life, GTA all very narrative heavy but masterfully executed, some of the most immersive games I have played. They aren't just immersive because of the writing and cutscenes though, it's because of the world, the quests, the pacing and the aesthetic as well, these games are very well directed and funded in general. These are the kinds of games you hope to have the opportunity to empty your wallet on.

I think Synth sees what I see, a Hollywood movie industry that has shot itself in the foot with greed, pandering and propaganda that is now looking to sink it's teeth into the body of a games industry struggling with similar wounds. The bedbugs are fleeing their sinking ship and taking over this one. Big budget movie games are dangerous to the industry/general quality of gameplay even if some of them are enjoyable. Neil Druckman and his ilk are my enemies. Demand gameplay, demand meaningful dialog choice, demand quality, or else "Please scan Doritos cool-ranch QR code now and refrain from touching the controller! Please enjoy your game!"

I've never heard of anyone saying they like Metroid style resets. Its always been shitty and will never not be shitty. Doing basically full resets in a game series where your still playing the character from the last game has always been shitty. I'll give them this, Henry hitting his head after a 30ft drop at least "makes sense" narratively.

Games series who spend 2-5 hours catching casuals up on what happened the last game is stupid and grating for people in the last game. The only time it makes sense logistically is if the games are from different console generations or switching to different consoles (something like bayonetta or kingdom hearts) at least then I can understand since your main audience or the target demographic likely didn't play or didn't have access to the hardware to play your last game. There should at least be a option in a RPG or sequel game where it asks "did you play the last game Y/N" or "Are you retarded and can't play games Y/N" and then if you select no on either category THEN it drops you into the 5 hour tutorial and strips you of your shit, giving you time to adjust and learn. Meanwhile the actual people who played the original game(s) of a series start at a elevated level, likely not the end game of the previous one but high enough that you feel like your not starting from scratch, IIRC Henry in that tutorial before he got crippled was a level 15 or so then got knocked down to a level 5. If the level cap is raised to even say 30 or 40, level 15 from the last game (whose level cap was 20) makes sense, since most people if they played start to finish will likely have achieved that level.


The real reason game devs dont do this is because there lazy and dont want to make that two tiered progression, or in game studios where theres alot of crunch time or deadlines, they dont have the time to, but i very much doubt Warhorse had such a short deadline to force out a sequel considering their first game came out 7 years ago, and they weren't exactly short on cash. Instead they wanted to add "CHOICES" for gay romances and railroading you through a slog at the start of the game. They basically ripped off their own start from the first game, beat for beat but they don't have the excuse of Henry being a nobody whose clueless about the world beyond his village. Theres very few good reasons why you cant start people off in a elevated level of power outside of appealing to people who bought the nu-product, and Devs not being able to properly make later game encounters challenging.
