Foxes, wolves, dogs and cats. True, there is the occasional otter or jackalope or dragon or whatever, but that's about it. Where are the squirrels, the muskrats, the koalas and the like..? For all the furries out there, there's not that much variety aside from the fursona's coloring. Even the edgy piercings are all seem the same.

Actually, I've seen a few squirrels around. I think most furries are just morons with a very small reference base: the only animals they really know are dogs and cats, and so they latch onto the "cute" (fox) and "cool" (wolf) versions of those animals. There's also some tiger or lion furries out there, but the wolf ones are the biggest group because they all REALLY want to fuck Fido. Why do you think they all love huskies so much? They're vaguely wolf-like.

Because most people have never had an original thought in their life, nor do they try to be original due to the fact they have never realized how tired the choice for their stupid sparkledog fursona is. Or they do realize it and rightfully don't care. Come on it isn't that hard to figure out, but I don't blame you for not wading through the shit yourself to find the characters with a more rarely used species, but I assure you that they are out there.
It is the same reason that there are so many fox, wolf, dog, cat and dragon fursonas that commission options like "your character here" or YCH are so popular. Basically, you pay an artist to put your character in a pre-rendered scene. So you're paying them to draw what they wanted to draw anyway. It's a lot easier for the commissioner rather than having the commissioner come up with an idea of their own. YCHs are very profitable.
