I'm not certain about this, but requests for production can be breathtakingly broad and unlike a subpoena, which generally can only require the party/witness to turn over documents already in their possession or control, a request for production can actually require the party to generate documents responsive to the request, e.g., a list of every lawsuit or criminal action you've ever been a party to with the court and docket number and outcome.
