And had another couple dozen countries ruled by socialists who were more or less closely affiliated with the premier communist governments in Moscow or Beijing without being directly controlled by them. Communists generally preached from well before 1917 that their goal was the entirety of the world being ruled according to communist doctrine. So perhaps non-communist countries had some reason to believe that they were under the threat of communist takeover
