A cat in Japan has defied the odds by surviving for a month in the scorching summer heat after the owner abandoned her in a flat. The cat, now named 'Miracle', survived by drinking water from the toilet and eating leftover food, according to a report in South China Morning Post.

Animal Rescue Tanpopo, a non-profit organisation working for animal protection, found Miracle in an empty flat where the floor was covered with alcohol cans, rubbish and leftover food. Chiaki Honda, leading the NGO, said she thought the cat was dead when the rescue workers discovered her beside the toilet.

However, after realising the cat had only passed out, the workers immediately took it to the hospital where Miracle managed to recover, courtesy of meticulous care from the staffers. As per the report, Miracle was extremely aggressive in the beginning, which suggested that the owners had abused her before leaving her to die.

As per Ms Honda, Miracle may have suffered brain damage and showed symptoms such as circling around and an inability to balance.

The police were involved and managed to arrest Miracle's former owner, a 27-year-old woman, on February 3. The accused confessed to leaving Miracle in the rented flat, which she fled without notifying the property owner.

While Miracle was inside without cat food and water, the temperatures reached upwards of 40 degrees Celsius making the flat almost furnace-like, as per the animal rescue workers.

Animal abuse
Since 2010, the National Police Agency has released data on animal cruelty cases. Of the 181 cases investigated by police in 2023, 97 involved cats and 65 involved dogs -- nearly 90 per cent of all cases.

Of these cases involving cats and dogs, 64 were for abandonment, followed by 57 cases of abuse including neglect, such as by lack of food or unsanitary living conditions, and 41 cases of intentional harm or killing.

According to Japan's animal cruelty laws, an individual found abusing or abandoning a pet animal is liable to imprisonment of up to one year and a fine of one million yen (Rs 5.7 lakh).

It would have been better to let the cat out and let it take its chances on the streets than this. Now I know that disgusting drunks exist even in societies where people are completely controlled by shame and other people's views of them.

They do. Japan just keeps its undesirables indoors. There are some fascinating and morbid documentaries about it, and you can find some of them online YouTube as well.

Might be one of those "just disappear" people that japan is dealing with.

I forget the weeb term for it, but now people on that godforsaken island just snap and intentionally turn themselves into missing persons.

Growing up in the 90's it saddens me to see that Japan is suffering from the social problems that they are and how they weren't able to explode onto the world stage the way they seemed to be gearing up to do back in the day. It used to be the joke that "the japs would eventually own everything", what with their electronics boom and getting into the industries the way they did, the successes of their auto industry, etc. If there was one country I wouldn't mind seeing get a little bit more ahead of the rest of the others out there in the East, it'd be Japan.

Good chance the story is just fake. South China Morning Post is notorious for running fake stories to make Japan look bad. Ironically they started that originally with running fake stories to make China look bad since they were originally a free and independent Hong Kong company, but after the CCP took over HK they've shifted to just doing the same shit to Japan.

They originally had a good reputation because they only made up fake shit about China, but they got into hot water during the Beijing Olympics in 2008 when they reported that they'd received dozens of reports of the CCP demanding that no Beijing bars or hotels do business with blacks or Indians or they'd lose their company. Sounds plausible because them dang dirty chinks are based like that, but the problem is no other news company was ever able to substantiate or receive even a single report of it themselves.

In the 2010's they went through 10 editor-in-chiefs in 11 years. Ultimately ending up with that he-she-beast on the right, Gina Chua who only lasted a few years before leaving.

Even reddit has been calling them out as untrustworthy for years.

I learned that just up until recently, in Japan you could just up and leave to a new town and there wasn't something like a SSN that could follow you. You could just go from Tokyo to Rikubetsu and be like "Hello, my name is Guy Incognito" and now you're a brand new person.

This isn't true at all. All Japanese have an SSN, it's just called a MyNumber.

The word people are looking for is 'johatsu', which is a western misunderstanding. First, people aren't going off the grid and becoming new people. You still have a MyNumber that follows you. Second, people aren't leaving behind everyone they knew, they are leaving behind the people they choose to and then contacting the ones they want to stay in contact with. They're able to do it because Japan has strict privacy laws. Private detectives are illegal (or highly, highly restricted in what they can do) and any company that gives up information about someone without court order will get legit raped in court no matter how big a zaibatsu (corporation) it is.

Why do it like this? Because Japs are afraid of offending/confrontation to a deep degree. Dating there is a nightmare with the ghosting that's on a level that would make even the most ardent western feminist notice there's a problem. It's so bad that many Jappos are afraid of quitting their job so they'll hire job quitting companies to notify their job that they're quitting.

The third and biggest reason for johatsu is the worst: it's divorced dads who don't want to pay child support for children they aren't allowed to see. In Japan there's no such thing as shared custody of children. The woman will almost always get sole custody and she is allowed to choose whether a dad gets to see his children again or not. You'd think this would be a no brainer, that any mom would see the value of the father remaining in their child's lives, but unfortunately the last study I saw was that nearly half of Jap moms say they "see no reason for a father to remain in children's lives after divorce". They'll deny him seeing the kids and then tell the kids dad doesn't want to see you. They still get paid child support either way. When the kids are 18 even if dad shows back up the damage is permanent.

Edit: It's been a few years since I was living there and they just passed a law making shared custody a thing, but it doesn't go into effect until at least 2026.

Some people just don't care about animals, happens in the US too with people leaving kittens inside of taped up boxes and cages instead of letting them out.

There's a massive push on the internet right now to make Japan look bad. Reddit has been notorious for their hatred of America for years, but in recent months I think anti-Japanese posting has outstripped it. China despises Japan and has literally hundreds of millions of NPCs willing to spend all day making "howdy my fellow Americans don't y'all think Japan is most dishonorable" posts.

You may be right because a couple of areas SCMP usually covers just had a few animal abuse stories go viral. China has no animal cruelty laws, Singapore has very lax animal cruelty laws, and a lot of surrounding countries follow suit by simply not pursuing. There's a pretty big stir right now on social media including some celebrities from the area speaking up when usually they just push the communist party lines on social media.

A 27 year old BITCH more like. No matter what country, that is just evil.
