Why has the US subsidized French defense so much since France drastically cut its military spending as a percentage of GDP in 1968 and kept going down to the present day? Adjusted for inflation, we gave France about $130 billion from 1946-1953 in direct military assistance. Then all the indirect subsidizing we did since 1968. Adjusted for inflation, we've given Israel about $228 billion in direct military assistance since 1946
