Two 8-month-old pit bulls that were loose in Nanaimo attacked several children, severely injuring at least one. Other people that came to aid the children were also injured.

The children were playing in a yard at the house of one of their friends. The dogs were from somewhere else in the neighborhood and had been cited for being at large previously.

One of the owners of the dogs came and got the dogs but did not stick around. The news interviewed the other owner, a Dangerhair that looked to be in her late 40s or early 50s. While she was devastated at what her dogs had done, she said to the reporter, "People are saying, look at this from the prospective of a parent, well, these dogs are my kids, too," and then she broke down crying.

It was later reported both dogs were euthanized, as there have been other incidents prior to this one, and due to the severity of the injuries the one particular child sustained.

To the dangerhair dog owner I would have to say, "If these dogs were your KIDS, you did a lousy job of raising them. Thank heavens you didn't spawn any of your own."

Looks one generation removed from being featured in the smashed and slammed thread. That's probably why the previous owner got rid of her(if she didn't eat a child).

A female coworker showed me a few of these adoption listings she's checking out. Surprisingly a couple didn't look to have any pit in them, but she's most interested in one that's at least part pit and rottweiler, maybe German Shepard too. She fits the profile; small, blonde, compensating for a lack of a man in her life. For her neighbors' sake I hope she gets a cat.

Euthanasia upon intake is usually reserved for healthy kittens and cats.
In dissection kits you find on online science courses for grade school students, you'll often find embalmed cats. This is where these cats and kittens go. You'll never find dogs there, even small dogs like Chihuahuas (which I've heard are also put down a lot) it's always cats. There is a bias agsinst cats as disposable, worthless animals that only pathetic people own (a.k.a childless cat ladies.) So I'm wondering if this is why you'll see people going all out for certifiably dangerous man biter dogs on euth lists, giving them chance after chance, but forget that there are cats on euthanasia lists that are in dire need of second chances.

As a cat lover, reading about pitbulls killing cats or shelters murdering healthy animals makes my heart hurt.

Admittedly I don't know too much about animal shelters, but from my research into the pitbull problem they seem to often be evil organisations that exacerbate the issues they're claiming to fix. I wish in the West we had a more Turkish attitude towards animals; rather than viewing all dogs and cats as potential pets we should recognise that many would be happy and healthy as community animals that we're all obligated to care for in some way.

Does anyone have any interesting reading material for someone who wants to understand the shelter industry?

Cats also tend not to do well in shelter spaces because they need spaces to roam (that's why there's all these stories of people adopting shy and despondent cats only for the cat to do a 180 in personality once they're comfortable).

Cats personalities vary in a way that humans do. With dogs, you know what you're going to get by breed but with cats, it's more up in the air. You could get a cat that is extremely affectionate and likes to cuddle and talk and seems to run on "dog software" or you could get a cat that is more timid, likes spending time next to you but doesn't really want to be pet (and gets mad when you do touch them; ive had both at the same time and the timid one would get insanely jealous of the affectionate one. Timid one ended up becoming affectionate though now she sleeps on the computer keyboard). Even cats that are "work animals" like barn cats you tend to leave them be as they hunt for rodents. With dogs, you tend to bond with them because you work along side like on a farm or hunting.

Cats and dogs are different in many ways. Love them both but dogs seem to have more active needs compared to cats (even play styles are different). Cats tend to be "okay" with being alone compared to dogs, who seem to need humans for most of their waking hours.

It also depends on the cat breed too, there are cat breeds now that are very social and want lots of attention, so it seems that cats might be going the way of dogs, in that sociableness and seeking out humans to be around are selected for.

Like Ragdolls for example. Calm, social, and can even play fetch.

Maine Coons also. I've had lots of feline mutts that love socializing too. One tabby would follow my husband around the house as he paced while on the phone, would sit on the couch while he watched TV and sleep under the covers next to him every single night. I have cats now who only want attention on her terms, but when she wants it she's very demanding about it.

I believe lots of shy shelter cats do end up being euthanized for space, which means the social trait is being selected for, even if shelter cats are neutered. A ton of cats get adopted off the street, friendly cat wanders onto your front porch and meows at you until you let them in; a lot of them are pregnant, and the friendly kittens adopted out to friends, who may or may not fix them, which ultimately is another way we're inadvertently selecting for socialbility among the mutts.

I'm the last person to go around calling things misogynistic but a long time ago I saw someone suggest the societal bias against cats is partly fueled by misogyny, as cats are considered a more feminine, girly, or, well, "pussy." I believe it. That is probably a factor regarding the dislike of toy dogs but not as strong as it is for cats.

This popped into my Youtube:
They claim its a Cane Corso, looks like an american bully(pitbull)-corso mix to me. It already managed to kill a family cat and get sent back to the shelter before the typical 2 y/o mark. If you took a shot everytime this guy said "trauma" you'd be dead a few minutes in. Admittedly I didn't get through the whole thing, stopped watching after he blamed the family for traumatizing the dog by leashing it to protect their other cats and their children from being attacked. Judging by the view and comments, normies eat this shit up. They treat it like an abused, autistic child, like someone should upend their lives to raise it to kill less.

I'll add Bombays to that too, my void is the most neediest cat I've ever had. He screams for attention, absolutely loves being picked up, cuddled, belly rubs, everything all the cats I've had before hated. He hates being left alone for longer than the usual times of being at work, and if I'm late for any reason, he's already at the door crying out for me when I get home. It's like having a dog that's in a cat suit sometimes.

Corsos are often one of the component breeds of a pit bull/bully/bully mix, so saying "he's not a pittie, he's a Corso mix" is as saying "I'm not American, I'm a 3rd gen Irish immigrant!" That may be truthful but it's a distinction without a difference.

The casual side eye tells me there is corso in there. Cane corsos are masters of doing that. It usually means, "What is it?" in a snotty teenager tone. A whale eye from them is pretty easy to tell apart from this because it doesn't have the same casual "tone". Anyway, if the dog needs leashed at all times due to aggression, they need put down. This isn't something the dog can be trained out of. This is a mental issue that makes the dog incompatible with life.

Mother and Son in Ohio have been found guilty at Trial by a jury of Felony Manslaughter (Involuntary) for the death of their neighbor who was mauled to death by their two nanny dogs. They both face a maximum possible sentence of 11 years in Prison, 20,000 dollar fine and civil restitution liability.

Mom, son guilty on all counts in fatal dog mauling attack that killed 73-year-old woman

A Pickaway County jury on Thursday convicted a mother and son of felony involuntary manslaughter after their two pit bulls killed their 73-year-old next door neighbor as she worked in her garden last fall.

Family members of Jo Ann Echelbarger wept in the front row of the courtroom as the verdicts were read aloud.

Susan Withers and her son, Adam Withers, stood quietly and didn't show emotion as Pickaway County Common Pleas Court Judge Matthew Chafin read off guilty findings on all six counts. They were also convicted on charges related to Ohio's dangerous dog laws.

The mother and son will return to jail and sentencing will be held later, said Chafin. Attorneys for the Withers said an appeal is expected.

The jury deliberated about six hours over two days after a three-day trial that featured emotional testimony, graphic police body camera footage and gruesome autopsy photos.

"We are just pleased that hopefully we've gotten some closure for the victims," said Pickaway County Prosecutor Jayme Fountain.

The Withers lived with their pit bulls, Apollo and Echo, at a condo she owns on Kildow Court in the village of Ashville.

On Oct. 17, 2024, Apollo and Echo got out of the condo and fatally mauled Echelbarger, who lived next door with her husband, Stanley, 84. Echelbarger was working in a garden on a patio space between their two condos when the dogs attacked. Her husband, who uses a walker and wheelchair, witnessed the attack from the screened-in porch.

Prosecutors charged the Withers with violations of Ohio's dog laws and felony involuntary manslaughter.

A year before Echelbarger's death, another neighbor, Kimberlee Black, and her goldendoodle puppy, Nemo, were attacked by Apollo in the condo complex. Black suffered fractures and lacerations and had to put Nemo down due to injuries. Pickaway County Dog Warden Preston Schumacher then designated Apollo as a dangerous dog, which triggered additional requirements for the Withers.

The previous attack on Black and her puppy also set the groundwork for more serious charges being lodged against the Withers in the Echelbarger case.

Generally, violations of Ohio's dog laws are misdemeanors, but the pet owners can face a fourth-degree felony for failing to control or confine a dog that has a documented history of dangerous or vicious behavior.

It's rare but not precedent setting for prosecutors to seek involuntary manslaughter charges in fatal dog attacks. A grand jury in Hamilton County this week indicted Warren Houston on involuntary manslaughter and other felonies in the death of his 3-year-old daughter, Kingsley Wright. Dogs killed Wright in a Dec. 27 attack in Houston's home in Cincinnati.

Dog owners in Ohio are liable for their pets' actions. Owners of dangerous dogs must prove that the animals have been microchipped, spayed or neutered and vaccinated. The dogs must be kept in locked enclosures when the owners aren't with them, and they must be muzzled and on a six-foot chain leash when walked.

A court may order the owner purchase liability insurance for a dangerous dog; extra insurance is required for owners of vicious dogs. The Circleville Municipal Court did not order the Withers to purchase liability insurance after Apollo attacked Black.

Cooper Elliott, the law firm representing the Echelbarger family, said a civil lawsuit will be filed to press for more accountability. The firm said: "For years, residents and neighbors sounded the alarm about these dangerous dogs. Yet, their concerns were ignored by those in power—the HOA and the dog warden—who had both the responsibility and the authority to take action. The failure to intervene cost Jo Ann Echelbarger her life. We demand accountability beyond this courtroom to prevent another senseless loss."

Police Bodycam footage of the incident. Its censored but still brutal. One dog was shot by officers as it charged them. The second was shot after officers saw it standing over the victims corpse.

It does actually look like a Corso. If it doesn't have papers I'd still assume it's a mix. A really, really bad mix because even real Cane Corsos can be incredibly aggressive, albeit not completely untrainable like shit bulls.

Something with at least some of the intelligence of a Corso and higher aggression could be a real nightmare dog.

Good. If you deliberately keep some worthless murderdogs and they murder people, you should be charged criminally for it. I'd say first degree depraved heart murder for these scum, though, would be better.

Cats get a reputation for being less sociable then Dogs for the simple reason that Dogs have facial muscles and cats do not. There has actually been some interesting studies that support the Cat Supremacy idea that actually cats are more socially complex then Dogs. Dogs use their facial muscles to manipulate humans, but it's very psychopathic, in that they don't really understand what is being conveyed but they know it gets them a positive response.

The infamous "puppy dog" eyes being an example. Applies well to Pits when you think about it. "Look, he's smiling!".

Cats on the other hand don't have facial muscles and thus cannot convey information through body language the way Dogs can. People really are only able to read the difference between "angry cat" and "not angry cat". Cat claws also make it much harder to do play fights. Though anyone with a cat knows that cats absolute adore doing it like all mammals. My own cat and me have reached a good understanding. I let her grab my arm when we do boxing, and she knows not too apply too much pressure with the claws and teeth when she grabs onto me.

In general I have found my cat to be more interesting then the dog from a purely emotional/cognition standpoint. The dog is a simple creature, but the cat I know is always up to something and planning ahead.

Lots of words just to say the obvious fact that cats rule, dogs drool.
I'm a dog person, but I don't mind cats. Can't we all just unite to hate shitbulls?
Good dogs are so incredibly awesome, they mindlessly worship you. Border collies love you so much, no matter how awful you actually are.

I hate that though. Quit loving me unconditionally when I'm a complete dick.

This is why I love cats. They know you're an asshole. They love you anyway.
