I've watched JD Vance's Munich speech three times now. This was the most fire speech to occur n Munich since the 1930's.
And I only say that slightly with my tongue in my cheek.
At the start it is so weird to have a Vice President who can not only speak clearly, he can use words like "Comity" correctly and in a way that people can understand even if that is the first time they have heard that word spoken out loud. Not even Dick Cheney, the evil fuck and "most powerful vice president ever" could pull that off. Insofar as he was eminently unlikeable and was a shit public speaker.
The clarity alone made the speech jarring. But what was really amazing was how clearly it articulated the American position and condemned the Beaurocracic world order as personified in the EU. The look of absolutely stunned shock on the faces in the crowd as the US Vice President put them all on blast. Even now 48 hours later they are still seething. But the only rebuttal they have for it was that it was "rude" and "not America's place to butt into our domestic political affairs".
But isn't that what was expected? That is the true genius of the speech. Vance essentially said that you can agree or disagree with what I am saying, but if you expect the American people to risk their blood and treasure for the European continent, it needs to be for the reasons of democratic norms and our shared civilization. Not for supporting authoritarian beaurocracy and unrestrained migration of foreigners with alien beliefs.
Reminded of Churchill.
