I agree, but it's important to add to this -- don't forget what they say when they cheer for your suffering. Not so you can gloat when they meet misfortune themselves, but just so you know whether to put any effort or resources into helping them (and of course so you know who never to ask for help, since you won't get it).
I think you've fallen for the Lefty idea that Russia has any ambitions beyond Ukraine. Russia being painted as a the central, Hitler-like figure who wants to roll over all of Europe, despite it taking them 4 years to maintain a steady hold of Eastern Ukraine, is just bizarre. And just to make a point about those army sizes, America has a population of 300+ million and a worldwide presence, whilst Poland has 36+ million and has a chunk of Europe to itself. Always take into account the context of economy, population size and geography when it comes to army sizes.

There needs to be a greater, underlying villain to the status quo/Neoliberal order in order to make their self-butchery of their own countries not just a masochistic exercise but a 'cause' they're 'fighting for'. Prior to the annexation of Crimea I think there was a shift from making the threat external to one that's internal because it's easier to paint swathes of your own population as being the enemy rather than some nebulous outsider group, because people grow steadily discontent when things become unfamiliar and worse as they did after 2008. The worst thing is after the fall of the Soviet Union we got a new outside threat in the form of Islamic terrorists, but painting Islam as the big bad whilst actively trying to import hundreds of thousands of them didn't compute, so they needed to dig up the past threat of 'fascism', 'nazism', and the 'far-right' to make their ideological self-destruction have any point.

It's a bit much to expect the average joe to know that Ukraine started the war with an army pumped to the gills with NATO equipment, larger than any other european nation aside from Russia, benefiting from NATO intelligence, and actively drafting somewhere in the neighborhood of a million men across the war thus far. In terms of soldiers involved, Russia has been waging war against an army the size of the collective non-US portion of NATO. This is why the EU is shitting itself at the thought of the US pulling out. Ukraine was stronger than any of them individually, and there's no way they'll unite to fight Russia.
It's not that they're supportive of it, more that like with many things they're just too fucking lazy to bother policing it.

Look the problem with researchers is often times your just paying money in many cases to these science institutions and grants that often take months if not years worth of meetings to get things moving on research.
