The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

Today's NY (Murdoch) Post:

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry paying big bucks to Dem operatives via their charity – sparking calls for a congressional investigation

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars to controversial political operatives through their charity, according to documents reviewed by The Post.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been spending big on high level Democrat party aligned sources, according to public records, including hiring a ‘disinformation expert’ who worked at a company involved in every high-profile US election since the 90s.

Buying their way into the Deep State? 8)
Just a couple of rich Californians throwing their money around to feel good?
But I get the impression this is a big no-no in a UK royal context.

The move could further widen the divide between Harry and his family, after brother Prince William recently met with President Donald Trump. King Charles is also said by the British press to have maintained a good relationship with Trump since he was last in office in 2020 and the president has expressed his support for both.

Congressional investigation?
More publicity, so it's all good. :lit:

Meghan has had to rebrand her company that doesn't make anything, "American Riviera Orchard" to "As Ever".

She utterly failed to defend the trademark since it was too generic and other people already used the term, but of course she presents a different story (in an aggressively faux-candid video):

Cats out of the bag. I'm shocked we've kept this a secret for so long. In two weeks, my show's coming out, which I'm so excited for, and also my business - which I think there's been a lot of curiosity about. Last year I thought "American Riviera", that sounds like such a great name, it's my neighbourhood, it's a nickname for Santa Barbara - but it limited me to just things that were manufactured and grown in this area. Then Netflix came on, not just as my partner in this show, but as my partner in my business... which was huge. I thought about it, and I'd been waiting for a moment to share a name that I'd secured in 2022, and this is the moment! And it's called "As Ever". As Ever essentially means "as it's always been", and if you've followed me since 2014 with The Tig, you'd know that I've always loved cooking and crafting and gardening. This is what I do, and I hadn't been able to share it with you in the same way for the past few years but now I can. So as things are starting to trickle out there, I want you to hear it from me first. Of course there will be fruit preserves, I think we're all clear at this point that jam is my jam, but there's so many more products that I just loved, that I use in my home, and now it's time to share it with you. So I can't wait for you to see it!
That might be one of the most aggressively Californian things I've ever seen. I'd also note that according to Vanity Fair, nobody in Montecito has ever heard the neighbourhood referred to as "American Riviera" and the claims about limiting it to regional produce are likely bunk. Came with this in the instagram description:
Some of you may have heard whispers about what I’ve been creating. In two weeks, my series on @netflix launches — but there’s something else I’ve been working on. I’m thrilled to introduce you to As Ever — a brand that I created and have poured my heart into. ‘As ever’ means ‘as it’s always been’ or some even say ‘in the same way as always’. If you’ve followed along since my days of creating The Tig, you’ll know this couldn’t be truer for me. This new chapter is an extension of what has always been my love language, beautifully weaving together everything I cherish — food, gardening, entertaining, thoughtful living, and finding joy in the everyday. I will keep sharing behind the scenes tidbits with you here as we ramp up to launch, and I can’t wait for you to get your hands on everything we’ve been creating. Sending lots of love…

As ever,
Meghan
Netflix is stocking whatever it is she's selling in their Netflix House locations, which aren't Department stores but are more like a Netflix version of Disneyland or Universal Studios. Apparently people had found a Shopify site for American Riviera Orchard so it clearly got hastily pulled. She'd applied for an extension to her trademark case in November, which doesn't seem to have gone anywhere, and delayed her Netflix series that was supposed to come out in early January because of the fires, and it's been re-edited to "show her philanthropic work in the aftermath" (apparently she got a girl Billie Eilish merch or something), but it's very clearly also to re-edit anywhere where she plugs her brand.

It’s incredible that this is the branding she comes out with when she must have access to the top branding consultants money can buy. It literally looks like something I would see as a template for tropical wedding invites in Canva. Like @Tasty Tatty observed, it’s especially ironic that she comes off as so inauthentic compared to Kate when that’s obviously exactly what she intended to capitalize off of.
