A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Not a tech expert, but I would expect it to be because of burners. The types of people you would want to track and would need to expend effort to do so would not keep a sim card, device or a wattsapp/snapchat/telegram account for any significant amount of time, and would not commit anything to written form. Encrochat was an outlier here, they kept the same device for long periods and actually wrote what they were doing.

Human sources of information are still valuable, either ones that come forward or sources they plant themselves.

MP Mike Amesbury, who admitted repeatedly punching a constituent in the street, has had his 10-week prison sentence suspended following an appeal.
The Runcorn and Helsby MP assaulted Paul Fellows, 45, following a row in Frodsham, Cheshire, last year and was jailed by magistrates on Monday.
Amesbury, who has had his Labour whip removed, launched an appeal and a judge said that while the length of the sentence had been "spot on", it should be suspended.
Judge Steven Everett, sitting with two magistrates at Chester Crown Court, also ordered Amesbury to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

Amesbury must also undertake a alcohol monitoring programme, go on an anger management course and carry out 20 days of rehabilitation work.

On the fence with this one. If this is his first offence, it's really unusual to get a custodial sentence.

Especially with the state of the prisons right now, you can hospitalise someone and not necessarily get jailed.

Two Tier in that if the victim had a protected characteristic the MP would have been more likely to go down yes. Giving a vanilla white guy a beating and getting a sentence for it first time around is not normal.

Magistrate given warning for posting Hamas video

A magistrate has been given a formal warning for serious misconduct by a judicial watchdog for sharing on social media a video from Hamas about the 7 October 2023 attacks on Israel.
Abdul Malik, who is also a Bristol City councillor and mosque leader, originally claimed he had only been tagged in the post but later accepted he must have shared the post himself.
The Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO) found Mr Malik had "failed to exercise due care and diligence" and his actions "had a detrimental effect" upon the "reputation of the magistracy".
The Green Party councillor has apologised repeatedly for the incident and insisted that he does not support Hamas.
The party said "he has made abundantly clear that he does not endorse" the contents of the post he shared.

You can scrape by if you leave the UK for a less affluent part of Europe or some of the anglofied parts of Spain. Nobody comes to the UK to retire, not even the super wealthy because they can afford better or move to nicer places with less trouble. London might be fun in your 20s, less so when you're older.

Brits generally aren't NHS medical tourists (not counting British territories of course like the Falkland Islanders who come to the UK for services they cant get there), they tend to be someones Grandmother from back in the motherland who moves over for as long as they need care and then goes back.

Poorer Brits aren't increasingly retiring to shitholes because they love the cuisine and suddenly want to fuck ladyboys. They do it because they don't financially have much of an option because the Brits despise and hate their elderly.

Starmer apparently was entertaining the idea of refusing the state pension to ex pats, until he realised how many would come back and how much more they would cost if they were back in the UK.
