Others have replied to your statement about the mistreatment colonists were facing from England, but I'll expand a bit with what little I know: France was predisposed to help the colonies break away from England because France and England were adversaries. If you can discount John Adams' missteps as an ambassador to France, the colonists generally behaved well towards France during their talks. This ties into what happened with Zelensky today.
