I think what everyone's forgetting is China. After years of war, the Russians have been bled dry; they're not the existential threat everyone thinks they are. The Chinese, however, have been flexing their soft power. They're infiltrating Canada, they're trying to get control of the Panama Canal, they're colonizing Africa through their belt-and-road initiative, they're carefully bribing US officials, and they're infiltrating education through their Confucius Institutes. Trump is one of the few people in Washington aware of the Chinese threat and wants to deal with it immediately.
However, this can't be done while we're pouring money into the pit called Ukraine. The war there needs to end, not only for good PR, but so America can pivot to dealing with the Chinese dragon. Given today's events, the funding will be cut immediately, and we'll see Trump focus much more on curbing China's power.
