Absolute bullshit. Government workers are the most useless bottom of the barrel developers you can get. Government jobs pay under markets, but had very little risk of layoffs of termination until recently. However if you show any initiative, you'll get pushed out because it would make everyone else look bad. Government projects go no where, until they use your tax money to pay an expensive contractor to build it after their in-house team wastes a few million making zero progress.
I've interviewed a few devs from government and I've never given one a positive score.

For context, we are located in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. My brother and I are college students, and our school has a study abroad requirement. We both applied to get our passports for the first time, since this is our first time traveling abroad. Mine went through but his was put on hold. My brother is transgender (Female to Male) and has undergone the process of changing all of his identifying legal documents, including his driver's license and birth certificate. He also filed a legal name change, so there is virtually no evidence that he was ever female.
I am unsure how, but the Department of State or whoever is in charge of passports deduced that his birth certificate had been changed. They are now asking for a copy of his birth certificate that reflects his biological sex. The problem is that such a copy does not exist, as it was taken when he got it changed.
Essentially, they are denying him a passport unless he somehow finds a birth certificate that says 'female' on it. I am also doubtful that doing this would satisfy the requirements, since under the Trump administration, the mismatch would prove that he is transgender and they would continually find reasons to put his passport on hold. I feel like the only option for him is to change all of his gender markers back to female, and we want to avoid this at all costs. What should my family do in this situation? Any advice or resources is appreciated.

I've seen this sentiment on Twitter as well, from otherwise anti-woke accounts.

Yeah no. I'd understand if they were speaking about autists, because I can believe that autism often comes hand-in-hand with being good at engineering.

But being trans doesn't make you a good coder. It's just that a lot of good coders are autistic, and transgenderism happens to be the hot new trend among autists at the moment. And being transgender doesn't help in coding; if anything, it's a hindrance - it alienates other people, it comes with serious mental and physiological problems, it makes you difficult to work with. Anti-trans policies are good because they limit the spread of transgenderism via social contagion. In the long run, if we're lucky, we'll see just as many talented coders but none of them trans (instead they'll be fixated on some other trend, hopefully less harmful.)

I'm at least 60% sure that by the end of his term the left is gonna be completely gassed out from fuming over Trump for over a decade. Remember that until around 2022 Reddit was utterly smitten with Musk and around 2012-2013 every post in r/pics was about how badass Putin was. They're perhaps more fanatical than ever, but these people have zero convictions or loyalties beyond who can provide them a sense of moral righteousness and consumerist comfort. I think the only reason they've been so fanatically anti-Trump for so long is that his victory in 2016 was such an intense undoing of their sense of reality that they felt they had no choice but to continually double down on the rhetoric that turned everyone against them.

Don't mean to derail the thread, but this new wave of "AMERICA IS DONE RUSSIA WON IT'S OVER WW3 NOW" got me thinking, is all.

It seemed like when Russia first invaded, everyone supported Ukraine. I even saw Republicans with facebook support, flying ukraine flags, ect. I know they had qualms about funding, but now they seem to HATE Ukraine, especiallaly after the press conference yesterday. What happened not at the press conference, but leading up to that to change so drastically?

What amuses me about this thread is that to find the best answers, you have to sort by controversial.

Answer: when the war first started pretty much everyone in the United States was on board with giving Ukraine aid, in a similar vein to how right after 9/11 pretty much everyone was okay with invading Iraq to hunt the terrorists. As time went on with Ukraine though, it became more apparent that to many Republicans, that even with more equipment nothing is actually changing the status of the war in Ukraine's favor. Hundreds of billions of dollars of aid has already been sent to Ukraine, but that is not enough. If you look at the population differences between Russia and Ukraine, you will know it would have been really tough odds even in a best case scenario.

At this point even before Trump got in the only way I can see the war ending is either the US and or one or more NATO countries send boots on the ground in defense of Ukraine or a negotiated surrender with Ukraine. I think with the Wagner uprising there was a third option but that failed to materialize. I don't think enough people in the West really would support sending boots on the ground in Russia to make that a realistic option, so the only other option is a negotiated surrender of Ukraine. Given that the war is killing a lot of people and destroying land every day, the sooner the peace, the better. This is the "MAGA" opinion on the topic, and I did my best to not straw man this and present a good faith argument, from that perspective vs some of the other comments which seem to theorize Trump is compromised and the right just always agrees with every single thing he says like a robot receiving a new signal.

It's called "the Red-Green Alliance." The very, very short version is that communists and islamists both hate the United States and want it destroyed. Many islamists believe in some variety of Arab-Socialism, grounded in Islam. With this context, the disappearance of the "anti-war left" makes more sense - the left loves war. In fact, the only wars they've ever opposed are wars against fellow communists. For instance, it's worth noting that the motto of Iraq's Ba'ath Party under Saddam Hussein was "Unity, Freedom, Socialism."

I remember a few years ago, a former friend tried sending me a link to the Discworld or Terry Pratchett subreddit, I forget which. I had already told him at that point that I refused to click any of the Reddit links he insisted on sending me. I finally clicked that one, and sure as shit, the first post was celebrating how they now allowed some kind of political usertag (I'm not sure what they're called). He seemed genuinely confused why this was off-putting to me, how it was off-topic. I knew the worms had devoured his brain years before that, but that was one of the moments I realized he was a lost cause. I still have a deep hatred of Reddit for nuking my friend's mind.
