They think they live in a post war society. Most of Europe does it’s why they don’t react to foreigners the way they should (with distrust). They think that wars are something that happens to underdeveloped nations and dictatorships, that 1st world countries don’t need to justify their existence either through power or industry. They are like a fucking pug, they have had every survival instinct bred out of them and replaced with docile retards who unless directly threatened don’t react to threats. All of this and they are making their situation worse by the year, every year they restrict a new thing that makes them uncomfortable, each year they add more anti industry measures that make them unviable beyond being consumers, each year they add more protections for consumers (not bad in a vacuum) which makes them more undesirable to sell to. Europe is becoming weaker every year because they are losing the edge that countries need to have to survive the hoards and armies of those worse off then them or more ambitious then them.
They aren't being "left to their own terms". They are being domesticated by their owners.
how does this help Norway?
Norway gets to simultaneously look tough on the United States (very important; Orange Man Bad) and get to say later, when Russia has eaten most of eastern Europe, things like "well we refused the Americans fuel. This helped you, right? We can be friends since we aren't loyal to the Americans."
My understanding of Turkey is that its demographics are pretty well fucked, in that the educated, westernized part of the population that made it a real country have the same sort of birthrate as the rest of Europe, meaning well below replacement. Meanwhile the Islamist part of the population does what they do and they're growing 8x every two decades. So Erdogan leans on them to keep subverting their constitution and remaining dictator for life, but they fight like Musselmen, not a first world military.

They ultimately do much more business with the United States, but I expect Europe to start pulling out of those deals and agreements over the next four years. Europe loves warmongers like Obama and Biden; not because of anything they actually do, but because they pay lip service to ideas Europe loves. They love the idea that Americans "want to be more like Europe."
