Back in the day, when producing media in which a spoken portion included signing, or there was signer at a live event, the signer would be offset into a small bubble or in the corner of the screen, or not on screen, meaning deaf people would have to observe them from a distance from the speaker. That being the case, in order to be properly understood, they had to really overdo the facial expressions and gesturing to be seen.
