UN Trudeau announces 25% tariffs on US goods will take effect at midnight in response to Trump’s on Canadian products - Why does Trudeau hate Canada? Doesn't he know that tariffs only harm the country that enacts them?

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday he’s ready to start a trade war with President Trump if the US leader moves forward with 25% tariffs on products from the northern nation at midnight.

Trudeau called America’s impending action against Canada “unjustified” and vowed to not let it go “unanswered.”

“Should American tariffs come into effect tonight, Canada will, effective 12:01 a.m. EST tomorrow, respond with 25 per cent tariffs against $155 billion of American goods – starting with tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods immediately, and tariffs on the remaining $125 billion on American products in 21 days’ time,” he said in a statement.

“Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn, and should U.S. tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue several non-tariff measures.”

Trump told reporters at the White House earlier Monday 25% tariffs would be slapped on products from Canada and Mexico at midnight following a 30-day pause on the action.

He claimed the tariffs were a way to force the two nations to better combat the flow of fentanyl into the US and stop illegal immigration.

Trump, 78, has also said he wants to wipe away the trade imbalance between the US and the other two countries while pushing for more factories to relocate to the US.

Trudeau warned if the tariffs go into effect, Americans would need to cough up more cash for everyday products.

“Americans will pay more for groceries, gas, and cars, and potentially lose thousands of jobs. Tariffs will disrupt an incredibly successful trading relationship,” he said.

This is a breaking story. Please check back for updates.

Other way around. Trudeau just made everything America produces 25% more expensive in Canada.
Wouldn't it be 50% now because of reciprocal tariffs?
25% because they didn't do anything about the border and drugs
25% reciprocal tariffs due to Leafland's retaliatory tariffs.

And then there's the 25% on steel and aluminum Trump did last month. Leafs are going to suffah.

Tariffs will disrupt an incredibly successful trading relationship,” he said.

Their criteria for "not an emergency" is that we are not yet at the record 2005 deficit level. Even so they're forced to admit "Since Trump 1.0, the U.S. trade position eroded against Canada". They make a fair point that the trade deficit is worse for other partners, but it's pretty clear that it's not a made-up problem.

Tactically I wish Trump had started the tariff war with Mexico and held off on Canada, to avoid the risk of higher energy prices. The rest doesn't matter too much to the US economy, but if he wants to jumpstart US manufacturing we need cheaper energy faster than "Drill baby drill" can deliver. But maybe I'm wrong and it's best to get all the price pain from all the countries out of the way first, instead of prolonging it.

I don't know if I have ever bought any "Made in Canada" products. Even maple syrup, made in Vermount. Which if I was getting from Canada exclusivally, oh no, an extra 2 bucks every other month....

I can only see this working if he tries to disrupt the oil from Alaska. Which the pipelines run through Canada. I could be wrong, they may be under seas.

Drill baby, drill should be hitting us soon™️. As in we should see a fall within the month.

From that same article.

I understand that shitting on and bullying Leafs is trendy right now.

But I don't understand that Canada being a tenth of the size of the US in population while being its main trading partner, could be expected to have a neutral trade balance when one export market is 900% larger.
