Lately, been thinking that there's something going on in the production side of retail, lot of companies slashing private labels offerings and boosting their own brands. I keep on running into issues of store brand offerings shrinking in size or being discontinued entirely while the name brand options are hitting everywhere. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but it feels like every store is pushing name brands everywhere, while their own branded product is shrinking in presence or disappearing.
Someone upthread was speculating that the supply chain on most things has more or less collapsed and the astronomical rise in grocery prices is to tamp down demand to keep shelves from emptying
Quoting myself for info for the first poster, who I agree with and never considered the home-made brands.Financial figures have been screwed with to make inflation look worse than it is, most of us know this, for those who don't, the items used by (The UK Government) to calculate the rate of inflation were changed in 2020, to mask how rampant inflation was.
Inflation isn't high for financial reasons, but because of supply and demand of food. Inflation is being used to hide how horrendously close we are to empty shelves and civil panic, so a deal has been struck; High demand and low supply puts prices up, to a certain point, to mask how badly the supply really is.
However, this is failing, as people are adjusting to the higher cost of living, meaning they keep 'rubber-banding' back to their old purchase habits, forcing overnight price-hikes in products to dissuade people from buying, while maintaining a profit margin for the companies.
TL;DR - Inflation is masking starvation-levels of poor supply chains, while stabby-migrants are being used as a distraction so no-one looks too closely.
I did notice, just yesterday, funnily enough, that my store-brand cereal - which is 1/5th of the price and more healthy than the name-brand alternative, is out of stock, and has no date for when the next lot come in. I've been buying this product without issue for a year and have never seen the stock even low, let alone gone.
Very peculiar.
