The only major character that's still alive is the bald pooner and I don't think anyone wants to play that game.

If I were in charge of the series, a Last of Us 2 wouldn't have even focused on Joel and Ellie due to the way the first game ended, but would instead have been another story focusing on a different individual or group trying to survive in the apocalypse. Maybe we get cameos with two wandering drifters passing by the new protagonists or some shit, but other than that they don't appear. If the second game did that, then there would be a potential format where you wouldn't need to focus on Joel and Ellie, but they instead painted themselves into a corner and are left with nothing for a third game. Which is a good thing, but like I said, I suspect that someone at Sony will try to scrape the bottom of the barrel for something.

The Telltale The Walking Dead games, flawed as they may have been, were a great example of this, and how it can work. You were following a different group(s) of survivors, who helped broaden the world and let you know that there were survivors other than Rick's crew. The focus became the world - you wanted to know just what happened, how did it happen, could it have been stopped? Is there any place still safe? The relationship between Joel and Ellie was great in TLOU, but it didn't have to stick with that relationship. The TLOU world was a perfect example of one that would benefit from your suggestion.

A series that's seemingly having the reverse issue is Yakuza, due to their heavy character-focus. It's difficult to dump a new protagonist in a series like that, and is why they keep dragging back the fan favourites Majima and Kiryu to star in new games, despite the efforts to end the Kiryu saga.

They couldn't get the multiplayer game off the ground and TLOU2 did not sell as well as they hoped. Neil is probably also just going to go full Hollyjew with the HBO show and since he has effectively removed the first game's co-director from ever existing in the context of the game he helped make, there isn't anyone left at the company with a vested interest in the IP.

In the early days of TLOU1's release they were pretty insistent that a sequel would follow different characters. I get the sneaking suspicion that this changed when Neil saw the reaction to Joel's decision wasn't quite vitriolic enough for his liking.

It's difficult to dump a new protagonist in a series like that, and is why they keep dragging back the fan favourites Majima and Kiryu to star in new games, despite the efforts to end the Kiryu saga.

Seen some mods for TLOU1 on PC, mostly clothing since nobody is gonna do porn mods with a 13yo girl (and wherever its happening I'm not going there) but if TLOU2 launches on PC it might be possible to replace her model, the story will still be shit tho.

I can understand Joel not wanting Ellie to die just to have a shot at saving humanity, but you'd think living through the actual apocalypse as the potential solution would make you put the greater humanity before yourself and your own sexual preferences. The Fireflies are a bunch of hacks. Fungal infections are a bitch to cure. Instead of killing the immune, they should get their eggs/sperm and ensure the next generation has immunity to the fungus and be able to rebuild civilisation. The fungus, without infecting humans, will die out. Also, even if they were to develop a vaccine, how would they manufacture it? Where are the factories? How will they distribute the vaccine without getting attacked? What would happen if they run out of immune before they find a vaccine? That story expects us to side with idiots.

Only "media literacy" experts would argue that massacring the Fireflies down to the last man was not the right choice. In the first game, all they seem to do is make things worse for everyone involved, with no clear justification other than "the government is mean".

My mom got forced to watch the TV show even though she hated the first episode and thought it was just too sad to watch. Which is weird since I had her watch The Terror which is one of the saddest shows ever made but she loved that, probably because it isn't nihilistic garbage like TLOU2 (that "Are we brothers Francis? I'd very much like that" scene always chokes me up). She ended up liking the HBO TLOU show. I warned her not to get invested. These fuckers are gonna make my mom sad and I hate them for it.
