Can someone educate me on why it HAS to be weed? I thought we already had several different painkillers for that, but those people act like this is the only thing they can use and will literally die if they can't use it

Most of those different painkillers are opiates, and there's a subset of the population that have extremely negative reactions to those kinds of drugs. It's not even particularly consistent within families - opiates like vicodin are just another drug for me, but both my parents get violently ill on something as mild as codeine.

The original medicinal marijuana legalization movement was about addressing those people for whom modern painkillers simply were not viable before it got co-opted by recreational users.

Chronic pain doesn't always respond the best to opiate painkillers. Most of the stronger, non-opiates can't be taken long term. Agents like gabapentin and pregabalin are only useful for chronic neurological pain.
