I’d say this is true of a good portion of Tophia’s alogs too. Albuquerque has always been bad for property crime. However, random violent crime was pretty uncommon before the explosion of the homeless population in the last 10 years. Prior to that there were very few parts of town you couldn't walk through any time of day or night (your car would absolutely be broken into though). Blacks make up a very small percentage of the population (growing though) and racial genuine hostility used to be very low. Immigrants, legal or otherwise, used to be pretty hard workers; but now there are more of them, there's less integration, and their having kids. Their first generation kids are a significant part of the new violence epidemic.

Abq has always been dirty. That's kinda part of a desert city with a serious windy season. You get a lot of wind-blown trash and no rain to clean it or vegetation to hide it. Just chain-link fences to catch it for all to see.

That said, the city still has a lot of very nice areas. However it is on a steep downward trend with increasing crime and violence, handicapped law enforcement, increasing immigration, spiraling cost of living, and a city government that is bafflingly hostile to most of the population.
