UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Gen Z risks benefits crisis as four in 10 consider giving up work
Turns out killing the job market by flooding it with low skilled browns and blacks who will work longer then you for way less and making wages stagnate for the better part of 2 decades really puts off young people from even wanting to work in the first place.

Can't make them work, can't conscript them. What hope do we even have for gen z?
It's sad. My calculus is no longer "how can we rescue Britain?", it's, "can I make enough money and get my family the fuck out before it gets too bad". I'm sure I'm not the only one.

You pull their benefits entitlement and make them the problem of parents who raised these supine miserable little cunts who squeal "there's nooo poooooint" and "whyyyy tryyyy" at 21 the same way they did at 12. That is what will happen to them. There is a painful belief in this country that your crotchlings are only your problem until 16, 17, 18, and then even though you have allowed them to not go to school "because anxiety and bullying" and other total bullshit, somehow magically you will be relieved of responsibility for them at the door of adulthood and will be able to get the fuckwit you raised off your sofa. Life does not work that way. You have the kids you chose to bring up. If you let them sit on their arse moaning and mouldering their entire life, of course they are a fucking unemployable retard. This is your fucking fault. You should be assigned responsibility for that. The solution to this problem is to require parents to house and aliment their children not just up to the age of 16, but the age of 25. No benefits entitlement up to that point, including if the child is themselves a parent. Watch how fucking motivated parents suddenly become to make the little shites go to college and get a job down the McDonalds once they have to pay for the blob they raised.

You're right about all of this.

But I still think those Wicked handbags are a waste of money, luv.

I have my sympathy for gen z, they really did grow up in one of the worst times for getting a job and buying a house like their parents and their parents parents did. But I can't stand them being lazy and entitled to things that they never earnt. I know boomers who whilst they have had it good, they had to earn it working some of the worst jobs of the day to get what they did. Then on the other end I have some 19 year old where I work try and do the bare minimum, hoping I'll do their job for them whilst their on their phone who will still lecture me on just oh so bad they have it.

If they put the work in and they get screwed by the system then you feel bad for them but if it's some doll dosser who maybe worked in a Tesco once then fuck em.

Everyone hates benefits scroungers expecting everyone to pay for their crotch goblins. Or those faking disabilities to get money from the state, that’s why my account even started on here. But Starmer and Labour are the biggest retards on the planet for doing this after they are increasing other areas of expenditure. Billions for Ukraine, Chagos, rapeugees the list goes on and on. Even the BBC had a call out about how Labour are cutting benefits to fund wars.

It’s actually working Starmer intended though, because many people are distracted talking about Becky the chav with her bad back & “useless NHS middle managers” and now they are ignoring the Mohammed in the room.

Surely he knows the vast majority of British citizens are getting sick of muslims and them always being pandered to. Too many grooming gangs, too many attacks of peace, too little intergration and a preference of living in parallel societies where they actively prey upon the natives. Suck a dog's cock, Farage.

I refuse to vote Reform for the local elections. If all we will get is the Conservatives again but some how even more cucked then I'd rather watch this ship sink then try attempt to save it with a colander.

Farage just had to put his ego aside for 4 years and he would have been handed the next election but he just had to let his ego sink the whole thing as he had done to UKIP and the Brexit party and now he's spending more time sucking up to Muslims who will NEVER vote for him and for what? He still might get invited to a couple of Westminster receptions and the same TV networks that hate him...Still hate him...

Congrats Nigel at destroying the British Right wing for the past 30 years and dooming the nation to eternal Blairism.

To get down to brass tacks, who the fuck is it he thinks votes for him and Reform and what the fuck does he think they want, is he losing all grip on electoral reality

If you look at it from the lens of being controlled opposition, Farage is doing a remarkable bang up job. He just ensured there will be no coherent political opposition to whatever Labour has in mind.

Farage is having an iDubbz moment….

….. Or he was an establishment stooge all along.

lmao, even

Just can't help himself. The facade is now buried and any lingering hope he may have harboured of gatekeeping actual nationalists is gone.

He doesn't look all that well, either - maybe he no longer cares because he doesn't think he'll make it to 2029.

You're right about all of this.

Still toting the sparkly green one around unrepentantly, my brother. The makeup was mostly shite quality though, I'll give you that. I was overexcited by green glitter despite my big age and it will probably happen again.

But you're a dad, you know what I mean. You have to, as a parent, bring your kids up in the expectation that they are going to have a fucking future and a life. Kids in my experience start talking about "what I want to be when I grow up" before they even get to school. Obviously at this point most of their suggestions are mad bullshit (one of mine still wants to be an astronaut but god help me I will never get between her and that dream as long as she is working hard towards it and a science career) but the point is that we encourage them to think of themselves as somebody with goals, who will have the ability to choose a job one day, to think of themselves as someone who will grow up to be something.

One of mine has the goal to "own a teal Lambo" no lie. Is that a stupid goal, well probably but it's a goal, he's six, and he always says "so I need to work very hard at school and get a good job so I can save up the money for it". You know, that's fine, that's goals. At six that's a goal for your future. You're no use at football son, and you can't rap, so I doubt it will happen any time soon, but you have an image of yourself as a person with a future so we can work with that. And then you will probably be a dentist and that is 100% fine, a great choice.

But I fell into the mother parts of the internet a decade ago and they make me so fucking blackpilled I lose perspective. There are giant FB communities with like a million members (I am not joking) and basically every post every day amounts to "My child is completely useless HOW I BLAME THE SCHOOL" and the comments are full of shite about how "my child feels sad and anxious so she's not been into school for three years and now how does she get a college place" and it makes me want to yeet computer. This country is absolutely fucking rammed with people who have given up on making their kids do anything they don't want to do and then are angry because the Magic Child Rearing Fairy has not suddenly made the kid educated and motivated and well adapted for the future. The posts about "how can I get a job for my 17 year old who has no GCSEs and social anxiety and doesn't want a job involving the public" make my eyes roll back like the fucking Undertaker. We all hate people especially customers, but to not be academic and also antisocial is not a fucking option for the rest of your life, why have these kids been raised to think it is fine. You have to get a fucking job because you need money to live. It is not optional.

And I'm going to be absolutely straight here, what I observe makes me think that there are a lot of parents in this country who are just not fucking trying. As long as the kid doesn't act up or cause actual trouble, as long as mum and dad can go to work without being sent for, as long as they aren't getting lifted by the cops regularly, many parents in this country are letting their kids grow up like vegetables fingerfucking a phone on the sofa and left in the house to wilt like houseplants. And then they don't understand why the kids are completely unmotivated and their mental health is in the gutter.

Kids are supposed to have dreams and goals. They are supposed to grow up thinking they have a future. It is our job to make sure they know that, to point them in the direction of making choices about that future, to prevent them making stupid choices like to stop going to school to ensure they have actually got some future. Parenting is hard work and often a complete pain in the arse. It is not our job to take the path of least resistance. It is our job to guide and support them and to stop them going off rails until they are young adults and can reasonably make good choices for themselves. Too many people are just not fucking trying and the evidence and the wreckage are all around us. It is not fair on the children.

Welfare Claimants

The article lists several "real life" cases of people claiming various benefits.
I'm interested as to what people think of each case. If you were in charge, had a huge voting majority, with a Civil Service that had the will to see it through, who would get what ? Would you change anything, would some get nothing, somebody else get more ?

The government is expected to announce changes to long-term sickness and disability benefits next week.
An increase in the number of people claiming long-term, health-related benefits has pushed the total welfare bill to £64bn a year. Some argue that reforming the system would encourage claimants to work, or work more.
Many people raised changes to the benefits system as an issue that's important to them via Your Voice, Your BBC News.
We spoke to several of those concerned about how the cuts might affect them

Alison, 56, who lives with her brother in a council property in Southampton, says she feels "sick" at the prospect of cuts.
She has been diagnosed with depression, anxiety and PTSD brought on by childhood traumas. She also suffers panic attacks and night terrors. Since Covid she is afraid of leaving the house due to "fear of germs".
Alison hasn't worked since she lost her job with Southampton City Council in 1997, and claims both PIP, the main disability benefit, and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) totalling around £1,700 per month.
She says she would find it difficult to cope with the pressure of a job.
"It's not a case of not wanting to [work]," she says. "I think about it all the time.
"Being on benefits doesn't make me feel happy."
Alison has been told her benefit entitlement will last until 2027, but she says the prospect of it being cut after that is "extremely upsetting".

Emily, 41, lives in Croydon, is autistic and struggles with time management and organising basic tasks for her daily routine.
"My autism has prevented me from getting jobs in the past," she says.
"Sometimes in interviews I wasn't able to answer any of the questions.
"I was umming and ahhing a lot, repeating myself. When you do that, people think 'this person is strange. We don't want this person'."
She is now working full time as a flight attendant and has developed strategies to help with being late, including getting up much earlier to allow extra time before shifts.
She is aware of the criticism benefit claimants often receive. "I'm not a scrounger," she says.
Emily gets more than £400 per month in PIP payments, which are not dependent on the recipient's income. But the money mostly goes on her regular bills, rather than on the occupational therapy she thinks would really help her to establish a proper routine.
Receiving PIP also means she is eligible for a disabled discount railcard, which makes travel to work more affordable.
"It's a big thing," she says. "I would struggle to pay."

Justine, 42, was born with a painful genetic condition affecting her joints.
Even movements as minor as chopping vegetables or sneezing can result in a dislocation. She has also developed dysautonomia, a condition affecting her nervous system, that can cause her to faint.
The constant pain, and other symptoms, cause fatigue, but she manages to work 14 hours a week tutoring, supporting students with special educational needs.
"For a year I couldn't work at all. Then I started to get more on top of things. I got a diagnosis and medication and started to feel a bit better.
"But as far as most of my doctors are concerned, they're very surprised I work at all."
Without the £737 financial support each month, which helps pay for help in the house and transport, she says she wouldn't be able to work.
"It would be counterproductive, it wouldn't save them money," she says, because her other benefits would rise if she lost her earnings.

Steve from South London had to stop working after a car accident left him with chronic cervical spondylosis, which affects the health of bones and skin on the neck, and brain damage.
He misses working but says taking away his benefits wouldn't mean he was able to take up a job.
"In my situation, I get a lot of ignorant comments... Why don't I jump on a moped on Uber Eats? Everything you do normally...it hurts. If I stand up too long it hurts," he says.
"What am I supposed to do? Float?".
Steve receives universal credit, as well as incapacity benefits including PIP, but says it is hard to meet his energy bills and pay for food with the income he is on.
"My life is already at below minimal quality - that will reduce further and health will suffer first," he says.
Encouraging people on benefits to go back to work can feel like bullying, he says.
"When the government say 'encourage', the reality is 'threaten'," he says. "You're being threatened back to work."

Alba, 53, is an IT contractor in Dorking who is currently working for one of the airports near London. While she suffers chronic back pain following two "quite severe" motorbike accidents, she doesn't currently receive any disability support.
During a period of unemployment last year, when she was eating into her savings to get by, she applied. But in March she was told that she was not eligible.
"They did their best to assess me – they were fair – and the conclusion is that I can do some work.
"That is true – but I wanted them to recognise I am in chronic pain," she says.
She is concerned that if her current contract is not renewed she may find it difficult to find a job that allows her to work from home.
"I'm not able to go to work every day in an office. I'm literally not," she says.
Her current employer has been "extremely helpful" in letting her work from home, a subject she has spoken to the BBC about before.
"I'm really glad I found this job," she says.
"I don't want to claim benefits – it's horrible. It's not my style," she adds. "I don't want to stay at home doing nothing."

The below is my opinion, obviously this is subjective, so I'm interested as to what others think ?

1. Cut. 28 years without a job is indefensible. Doesn't appear to have made an effort to overcome issues.
2.Slight increase to get therapy. Currently working - so deserves to be encouraged.
3.Rise at inflation - making an effort to do some work despite condition - admirable.
4.More information required - did he have insurance / a payout for the accident ? Would need to be regularly assessed regarding possibility of work from home.
5. Remain the same - nothing. Is currently working, so it can be done. Life is hard.

I note there are no examples in this article of many of the benefit claimants already mentioned here on this site by the BBC. It's strange that all the examples seem to be white British - fits their little agenda. No mention of economic migrants. Shouldn't there be multicultural representation or do the racist BBC think only white natives claim benefit ( or deserve scrutiny for doing so ) ?

Look at what’s been done here.
1. The article is nudge unit.
2. The nudge unit (behavioural insights team) has been briefed as follows;
‘Write an article that makes white native brits within the ages of 35-60 less sympathetic to benefit claimants in a similar demographic to them.’
4. Article is pitched by finding white native brits ‘just like you’ who are claiming benefits and presenting them in a slightly unfavourable light.
It’s like showing you someone just like you at your work who isn’t doing a great job and implying you’re picking the slack up. You see it through the lens of ‘ I would do a better job/well my joints hurt and I still work.’

Justine is likely touting the same condition practically everyone in the Munchie thread claims (hEDS). POTS is easily treated, just take your salt water like a good girl. It is unusual that this one is working though. Wouldn’t say she needs any extra cash. Half the ones with “hEDS” actually have benign hypermobility because hypermobility is actually super common in women anyway.
