As time went on into the middle ages, the majority of the countries were monarchies who existed relatively peacefully, aside from territory wars that popped up now and then,
Byzantine was a major buffer between the Balkans and the Ottoman Empire.
Since the middle ages, to relatively recently historically speaking. Serbia and it's neighboring countries were hardline conservatives. That meant veneration of God trough Orthodox Christianity and the stubborn fight against Turkish occupation. The Balkans were under Turkish occupation from 500 years, and fought them generationally. Culminating in a major conflict called "The Kosovo War"
If you're wondering why the Balkans aren't occupied by better developed European countries over the years. This is why. France has celebrated the Serbian "victory" over the Turks. But it was a Pyrrhic victory. A good majority of the adult male Serbian population was wiped out, leaving only women, children and the elderly. In reality, this "victory" only helped Europe fight the Turks off. Which resulted in European Renaissance, while the Balkans remained under Ottoman rule and supplied the Ottomans soldiers via a method called "the blood giving" or taking children to be recruited into the Ottoman army to become paid elite soldiers, Janissaries.
So while Europe enjoyed a period of cultural and artistic evolution, the Balkans stagnated. Which contributed to the reason why Serbia and it's neighbors are 2nd world countries to this day.
Fast forward much much much later, Ottomans are fought off, so the Balkans fought each other for resources. This formed a sort of National identity which embraced traditionalism and Orthodox Christianity.

By 2006, Yugoslavia fell. But during the process of countries leaving, and the death of Tito which gave even more reasons for neighboring countries to split for independence, leading up to the 2000s the Serbians were VERY UNHAPPY to say the least.
