....How do you fuck up a character like that?
Way to take a
very potentially-interesting character concept and drown it, YanDev.
I always thought that the thing about Yandere Chan as a character was that she was supposed to be a nutjob. How
much of a nutjob, and in what ways,
was entirely up to the player. The idea was that you could be as bloodthirsty or kind as you want. Without bashing on a broken record, it'd kind of be like Undertale, where what the
player does determines how Yandere Chan grew as a character.
Hell, that actually offers a fucking wealth of very interesting characterization challenges and some amazing possibilities for storytelling. Depending on the way the player acts, she could be anything from a misunderstood socially-maladjusted dumbass to being a full-blown cold-as-steel sociopath on a mission. You could mess with things
so badly if this was in the hands of anyone who remotely gave a shit or who had any real ideas on how to make things play out. Depending on how you handle the worldbuilding, this could make for some hard decisions. Are you really willing to go to an extreme that might kill someone Yandere Chan was otherwise friends with, or are there lines she won't cross?
In this setup, YanDev removes any of that. We get a bizarre backstory of how Yandere Chan was
always like this, and any impetus the player has in how she develops as a character is
gone. Not only this, but the backstory he
does provide is filled with more holes than a slice of lacey swiss. Shit like "she knew she was off as a baby" is fucking terrible storytelling, and just once again drives home how the game is less for its fanbase and more for YanDev's weird proclivities.
