I don't think they quite understand that my investment in discussing it has little to do with politics and more to do with societal/technological impacts. There were some reasonable people though that understood why I was asking that question.

It reminds me of my few dealings with vehemently pro-transgender people (I don't know whether they were actually transgender) and whenever you ask a simple question they shit the bed. Totally unable to just have an interesting discussion about the legal/societal impact and consequences of things.
