Both sides of any issue treat the US as the petri dish for systems and policies, so I have a proposition, with the hope that if it takes off in the US, it will take off abroad later on as well: There has to be some kind of law where if you own a piece of land and want to keep it, you have to actually live in the same country the land is in. Banks can still hold onto their properties (for now) as they are situated in the US, but this kind of mass squatting from out-of-country comes to a stop.
